Getzlaf, Perry, Marleau and Hossa are all excellent players and I would love them on my team any day. But look at when they hit their career-best in goals:
Getzlaf - age 28 (31 goals)
Perry - age 25 (50 goals)
Marleau - age 30 (44 goals)
Hossa - age 23 (45 goals)
With the exception of Marleau they were all around that age of 27 or in some cases even younger. It's the same with all the greats. Lemieux (85 goals, age 23), Gretzky (92 goals, age 22), Jagr (62 goals, age 24), Howe (49 goals, age 24).
I think you can make a case that they were all overall better players at later ages, but as far as goal scoring they aren't as prolific. And if you're dishing out $14 million a year for 8 years you want to hope that the player will continue to score goals at an elite level I think.
|
You're correct. I argued that they became better players. Even if goal scoring goes down a smidge, they become even better players. Getzlaf has to be a perfect example. J. Toews will be the same.

If we trade Monahan or Gaudreau I'm over this team. What an unbelievable disaster that would be.

Although adding an elite talent like Stamkos would be unreal, I really don't see the value in doing so right now. This is a young team forging an identity together. I'd rather they wait and let this group overcome adversity with each other, while looking to shore-up some of the other recent deficiencies, like goaltending and commitment to team-defence.
This team isn't close to competing for a Stanley Cup. Last year was an aberration (albeit an extremely fun and deserved one). Stay the course, Flames, and continue the build as planned.

McKenzie on the rumor. Calls Treliving a "stealth big deal guy" says he heard quite a bit about the Flames and Stamkos in the summer

Main reason I'd be hesitant to trade Monahan and a 1st is because that 1st is looking like it could be pretty high this year. Monahan and a 20 something pick is probably a decent trade if you can sign Stamkos to a fair deal. If Stamkos is say around 9 million and Monahan is going to want somewhere around 7 then I think you're better off with Stamkos. It seemed like Toews and Kane were setting the new standards in the NHL but other deals haven't really reflected that as much as I thought they would. That 1st is just what tips the scakes. That could be a top 10 pick and a very good player.

Friedman on Stamkos to Flames rumors:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/590/dean-blu...trade-rumours/
Summary:
heard about Stamkos to Buffalo rumor at before draft.
interesting thing about Flames rumor was that it first came out after July 1st when Stamkos' NMC had kicked in (implying that Stamkos would waive to go to Calgary?)
Calgary rumor went around the league but was denied by everyone involved.
Friedman's belief is that it was looked at, but didn't get anywhere
At least the possibility that the Flames were asked if they were willing to take on Stamkos.
Also mentions potentially a lot of teams were asked if they would consider taking Stamkos on, but the big question is if they were going to be able to re-sign him.

Trading Monahan would be an extremely tough pill to swallow for me. He's easily my favorite Flame, and also the most important in my opinion. I'm glad they mentioned he is probably the most untradeable Flame.
If Bennett was the centerpiece of a Stamkos deal, I would be OK with that. Although losing Bennett is not ideal, it's Steven Friggen Stamkos. You have to give up a core piece for a core piece.

I legitimately had a dream that the Flames trade Bennett for Stamkos last night and woke up with sticky sheets.

Mackenzie and Spector both said it didn't sound like anything happening now, that it was this summer

Surprising how quiet this rumor was in the summer it wasn't until recently that we heard about it. With Stamkos not signed and the Flames sputtering out of the gate it is not surprising that it is picking up steam.
If Stamkos does get moved Calgary likely is a team that is talking about it but that is because our GM is all over everything

That's what I'm thinking. If the Flames were 5-1 right now I don't think we'd be hearing any trade rumors involving Stamkos.

Any trade of that magnitude is going to be conditional on him signing in Calgary.

Not strange when you consider it's Dreger. He gets insulted when someone other than him has the inside scoop.

Disgusted by some people thinking Monahan would be involved. What a joke.
