I reckon of the three goalies, Ramo has the best chance of clearing.

I heard that one too but then looked at the dates and Jones was traded to San Jose on June 30th, and the Flames re-signed Ramo on July 1st, so the San Jose trade would have fallen through before we re-signed Ramo.
I have no doubt we were trying to shop Hiller but the order of events shows that it wasn't just San Jose backing out of a deal that left us with 3 goalies.

Kari Ramo is a good backup goalie, but he's not a NHL starter.
Good luck in the future.

No way anyone takes Ramo at 3.8 million although it would be doing us a favour. At least they were smart enough to only sign him for one year. I hope he goes down the minors and finds his game and gets another shot but if not I guess he is buried in the minors for a year.

Wow, I wasn't sure what we would see today but this wasn't one of the things I expected to shake things up. I am happy that this decision was made. Something had to be done and Ramo clearly wasn't up for the challenge this season. Ortio should be the next start. Please play him.

Glad this happened but this is a self inflicted wound as the guy should never been signed in the first place. Time to see what they have in Ortio and to be honest Ortio only has to be average in net and that will be a big improvement over the other guys this season to date.
No team is going to claim Ramo so I kind of hope they send him to Stockton for the rest of the season as a backup and injury call up. Time to move forward here to get better.

I'm happy with this decision. And imo proves that a trade wasn't going to happen. Cut your losses and start trying to play with some confidence and urgency.

I am not saying waiving him is a mistake. Signing him was. And the problem with waiving him is that it does not fix it at all unless he gets claimed. Otherwise Flames are stuck with a totally unnecessary cap hit. $3.8 million was too much to spend to give you some insurance in net and if he goes unclaimed, you know exactly what the rest of the league thinks.
A mistake is a mistake. Raymond is another guy that signed a year ago and passed through waivers unclaimed. He is still with the team but BT had to admit his mistake on that one too.
Team just needs to start playing better and the GM can look like a genius again.

I agree with the choice. Hiller was better IMO, though I acknowledge the opposite view, the statistics favour my view. But aside from that, Hiller's conservative style more complements a tandem with a kid like Ortio.
I also agree that Ramo will be sent down (not just clear and stay on the roster). This will give them a chance to bring up an extra defenceman. ETA: Oh, I see Smid is back, so same difference (though I might actually have preferred to see Nakladl).

When do we know if he clears?

I believe it's 10AM tomorrow, our time. If a trade is to be made, I think that it would be quickly after that, so if he suits up for a game in Stockton, I think that it's safe to assume Gilles/Ramo is our AHL tandem going forward.

Nice.
Gillies/Ramo in the AHL and Hiller/Ortio in the NHL looks really good to me.
Then we launch Hiller into the Sun and next year run with a 1a/1b of Ortio/Gillies and the cups will just start rolling in!!

Hopefully it gives Hiller some relief. Who knows he may end up playing better because he knows he has the number 1 postion instead of worrying about Ramo breathing down his neck constantly.

Maybe, but he has a young hungry goalie in Ortio who could easily steal the net from him. It's not like he's been difficult to beat this year.

I actually think the exact opposite.
Hes had every chance, every opportunity to take the net and he hasnt done it.
Now hes got to compete with Ortio. I think his competition just got harder, not easier.

"Ramo is just a bit too over active in the net, and ends up out of position and giving up bad goals at bad times.... If you could combine Ramo's athletic ability with Hiller's positioning and calmness, you'd have an elite goaltender..."
I would rather have a goaltender that moves rather than one that is on his knees as soon as the puck enters our zone.

I don't think it's who Hiller is competing with for starts that should have him relieved. It's knowing atleast for now that his spot on the Flames is safe.
