The team’s business manager, Bruce Vance, said the character, who is “an ancient Egyptian sort of guy,” has been part of the Raiders’ identity since the team joined the Western Hockey League in 1982.
Now, I'm by no means an expert on WHL history, but why exactly is a team in northern Saskatchewan culturally represented by "an ancient Egyptian sort of guy?"

I thought this part of the article was pretty telling:

Quote:
Omar Jamil, President of the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, said while he was initially taken aback by the mascot, he doesn’t think it’s offensive.
“He is smiling. He looks like an Arab playing hockey,” Jamil said.
If the mascot was carrying a sword or had “a frown on his face,” his feeling might be different, Jamil added.

How about some thread mining?

A touching tribute article from Yahoo/Puck Daddy today as Scorch debuted to the world 1 year ago today.

We all learned a lot from Scorch's brief existence, but most of all was don't include possible murder in your mascot's backstory.
Hahaha, awesome.

Call me a dreamer, but I believe that there's still an ember in a blacksmith shop in Glens Falls waiting to reignite. #sonofscorch

I always thought this would be a fun job, until just now when I watched that. No way I could do that.
