Any chance the Flames bring up Hunter Smith for the next game? Is that wishfull thinking?

Hunter Smith can't skate at an NHL level right now.

Hunter Smith is definitely not the answer.
They lads all need to settle down a little. I might even chalk it up to home ice DIS-advantage. Pressure and such.

I simply have a hard time blaming one player, certainly one without a letter, for any more than any other player last night.

oh I bet the Coaches gave the players an ear full after each period....
I would think there will be a different line up for Saturday's game... Raymond in / some one out (no clue who will sit, everyone was bad)
Same thing with the Goalies.... (Coaches were consistent last year, goalie wins he plays again)

He doesn't need to skate. Just take the opening faceoff.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler
Raymond - Backlund- Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - Granlund
Bouma - Stajan - Jones
I would like to see this lineup on Saturday.
Give Raymond a shot with some more skilled linemates. His salary dictates he should be a top 6 player, lets see if he can do that.
Bollig can sit. He didn't have a great night, and the timing of his hug fest ended up killing momentum for the Flames, and sucked a lot of energy from the building IMO.
I was also dissapointed in Jooris. His job is to bring energy and he brought none of it last night.
I like Granlund on a line with Ferland and Bennett. Need a little more skill for Bennett to play with, and Ferland/Bennett both provide enough energy that Jooris main attribute is wasted on that line.

Yeah I'm not sure about scratching Backlund after one bad game. Some players should need more than one game to earn a benching.
Hamilton was probably our worst defenseman...

This is a Hartley tactic. Sideman's response to his Game #2 scratch from last season was tremendous, and I think the hope is that Backlund can likewise use it to make the same adjustments. I don't think it is a bad idea, and Backlund is the sort of player who seems to respond well to challenges.

In addition, more is expected of Backlund than Jooris. It is not about whether Backlund is better than Jooris; it is about whether Backlund is as good as (or better than) he should be.

The Flames main weakness besides average goaltending is the lack of offensive production in the forward group outside of the top line. The Flames need to hope Bennett, Ferland and Frolik can produce or they will need to rely on their defenseman to drive most of the offense again this season.

I get that, but benching your veterans is a tactic that is effective when used sparingly. One game is too soon.
As for Wideman, he was not great for long stretches the year before. So I see that situation as different than Backlund.
Obviously Hartley knows a hell of a lot more about coaching than I do. So just my two cents but I'd keep my powder dry on this one a little longer.

well they have the most offensively talented collection of defensemen in the league, so I don't think that is an unrealistic expectation

Hamilton was hot garbage last night. Give him a game in the presser ala Wideman

How many lines were the same as last year? First offensive and second defensive? Not a surprise we lost but holy crap we need to learn passing and cycling in the offensive zone. No creativity displayed for the most part.
Dougie looked sick with nerves, like he was depressed from playing bad and he was going to vomit at the same time.

I guess we shall see what happens. With how Hartley handled this roster last year he has absolutely earned the benefit of doubt in my books—and with considerable latitude.

You can't just dump players in the press box without giving them a chance to redeem themselves. Otherwise, the press box visit won't have any effect.
I think dumping Hamilton in the press box after one game would likely have the completely opposite effect of the one you're thinking.
