Last night I saw 60 minutes had a show on the Duke University case. Wasn't familar with it but was surprised the coach of the accused players was being threatened, people were putting signs on his lawn, was forced to resign from his job of 16 years. Then he couldn't find work anywhere. I didn't see enough to find out why all this was happening but I'm assuming it was because he was supporting the accused? Just seemed like a quick rush to judgement for someone who wasn't even directly involved. Maybe there was something I missed since I only watched briefly. Anyone else catch it?

Which Duke university case was it? Duke have been in a few over the years. There is always story's of rape coming of Duke.

If your talking about the Lacrosse team case that was a #### show. There was such an immediate reaction because the story sounded so violent and Duke seems to always have some stories like yhis happening frequently.

The team captian called an escort service and got 2 strippers. One stripper accused 3 team members of rape.
The prosecutor called it a hate crime because the boys had asked for 2 white strippers but didn't receive them . The prosecutor and media quickly piled on that its about race etc etc. In the end she had changed her mind about who was actually she said was guilty over and over again , the other stripper said she was lying dna didn't match etc etc.

Its really hard to explain the gong show that took place. The prosecutor ended up being charged with mutiple crimes and disbarred.

The stripper who accused the team is currently in jail for killing her boyfriend in 2011.

Crystal Gail Magnum. It was all about race, and the District Attorney fabricating evidence, since he was running for election in a predominantly African American district.

It was the lacrosse case. I just found it odd that the coach was recieving so much criticism. Did he do something specifically that caused that? I assume he supported his guys but even then to fire someone because of that seemed excessive. Then no one would give him a coaching opportunity like he was the one being investigated. I suppose it was all because of politics in some form or another just seemed quite unjust. Probably easier to say that now though since the case is long over.

Didn't know the accuser was now in jail for murder. Obviously she was a bit unstable.

From the article:

Quote:
“One of the biggest problems in rape investigations is that police think women lie,” said Lisa Avalos, a University of Arkansas law professor who researches the prosecution of false rape claims.
Actually, police think people lie. They are not trusting people. They spend much of their time dealing with people who are trying to deceive them - both accused and accusers.

While the case in the article was a miscarriage of justice, the slant of the article isn't helpful. If the point is that the justice system today treats women who make rape accusations unfairly, then we need to compare how police and the courts handle those accusations with how police and the courts accusations of other crimes, such as common assault, extortion, and theft.

The police not believing victims of sexual assault is a lot higher than other crimes is a real problem. Some police even believe that false rape accusations are over 50%, which is way over the real number of false accusations. Of course police are suppose to be skeptical of everyone, but they don't start every investigation assuming the victim is probably making it up.

If only we had a lie detector that could 100% tell the truth.

How do you predict crime and be there before it happens? Just follow Kane around in the off season?

It seems like they are pretty good these days. Obvioulsy not 100% accurate but I'd think the vast majority of people would have a difficult time beating them.

I imagine it's not hard if he's carrying cash in his wallet and is taking taxis at 5 AM.

I'm not at all familiar with the technology etc, but I presume there is a reason (unreliability) that our courts have held that lie detector results are not admissible.

I read an article that mentioned if you take a test while thinking about different life events you can control the results.

For example:

Think of your grandma passing away while doing the control questions. Then think of marrying your wife during the questions.

Vs.

Thinking of marrying your wife during the control questions. Then thinking of your grandma passing away while doing the questions.

Both situations would yield different results on the same questions whether you are telling the truth or not. The tests are based on things that are controlled by emotions.
