Prospects that are left based on CP's Summer 2015 Prospect Ranking:
1. Sam Bennett
4. Micheal Ferland
5. Joni Ortio
8. Markus Granlund
11. Tyler Wotherspoon
19. Brett Kulak
23. Garnet Hathaway
Hathaway seems to be the biggest surprise so far.

Some who have been at the games IIRC have said they could see him pushing Engelland out. So you know, if he's good enough to play and comes cheap, we'd rather have him than not.
Also, it's possibly the old "rather have a veteran than a prospect eating popcorn as the 7th D" thing.
In any case they haven't signed him yet.

I don't think you can base 'surprises' off this list. It really depends on how people were voting. For myself, it was all about ceiling + the chance to actually achieve or come near to that ceiling. I didn't really vote based on "NHL-readiness" at all, and I am sure I wasn't the only one.

Kulak got assigned to the ECHL in his first year as a pro and it appears to have done wonders to his development.

Not really that surprising. He hasn't even had a full pro season yet. I guess it's surprising to the guy that thought he had a chance to be our #4 defenseman lol.

Columbus. He was sent to their AHL affiliate the other day.
I think you have to look at the player's age in those cases too. Kulak was 20 and straight out of junior when he was sent to the ECHL. Ramage was 22 and coming off of 4 years in College.
Just because Ramage is no longer in the Flames organization doesn't mean that sending him to the ECHL was bad for his development. He played well and was a key contributor to Alaska's Kelly Cup win. He also had a decent year in Adirondack last season.
Acquiring Hamilton, who's two years younger than Ramage and already an established NHLer; plus drafting Andersson and Kylington; as well as, Wotherspoon, Culkin, Kulak, Morrison, and Sieloff all being younger than Ramage and ahead of him on the depth chart, all combined to make it an easy decision to not qualify Ramage. That doesn't mean that sending him to the ECHL two years ago was a bad move.
Kylington is only 18 and playing his first season in North America. Sending him to the ECHL shouldn't really have any negative impact on his development if he has a good attitude about it (as long as the Flames trust the coaching staff in Adirondack).

I think Hathaway has no chance at making it and should've been sent to start training camp. It's not that he's bad, but we have no room. Surprised about Kulak too.

Yup. Then again it probably doesn't hurt him to miss some AHL training camp at this point. Some of the newer guys could need that more.
Plus of course 2-3 injuries could throw a new spin on things. (Not likely, but stuff like that can happen.)

The only surprise for me about Kulak is how good he's been the entire camp. But no surprise at all that he wasn't cut. Remains to be seen if he can keep this level of play up -- but if he can, he's gonna solidify a spot on the blueline this season.
As for Hathaway, the organization is openly pretty high on him, he has apparently been quite the leader for the Heat. I think he's just getting a longer look and will be one of the last cuts, but that's largely due to the number of viable options the Flames have on the bottom six already. If a guy like Bolig doesn't contribute enough on the fourth line, I can see a guy like Hathaway getting called up. Same goes for guys like Granlund, Byron and Shore -- who I think are ahead of Hathaway on the depth chart but that could change quickly .

Neither Kylington or Andersson were going to make the main squad. It's unrealistic to have assumed so.

Ramage went from an afterthought to the AHL Flames' top pairing last year. Did they think he was worth a contract spot? No, but he looked pretty okay in that exhibition game against the jets - I wouldn't be surprised if he claws his way to being a servicible 3rd pairing dman for Columbus.
BTW:
Ramage:
Pre-ECHL 50 AHL GP / 1 Point
Post-ECHL 57 AHL GP / 15 Points + 1 NHL GP
Elson:
Pre-ECHL 40 AHL GP / 3 Points
Post-ECHL 59 AHL GP / 30 Points
Kulak:
Pre-ECHL 20 AHL GP / 4 Points
Post-ECHL 20 AHL GP / 12 Points + 1 NHL GP
All three of those players did show progression after returning from that league.

Then you weren't paying attention. He had serious trouble keeping up with the play. Looked very slow and constantly behind. Not ready for the NHL. Nice hair though.

This should be stickied to both these players for the next two years. They look great, Anderson looks amazing. Yet camp and preseason means nothing. If it did we would be awarding the Stanley Cup to the Oilers already!

I'm thinking you have your swedish D men mixed up. Kylinton is not slow. Like at all. Andersson looked off -ish all the while proving stable in cmp and pre-season games. Andersson also has the poofy hockey flow.

I don't think "slow" is an adjective we can ever use for Kylington.
Edit: dammage got there first

Could Care Less

I feel torn about Byron. He should make the team in a 13th forward type role, but it just doesn't seem like there's room for him. Ideal scenario he makes the team in Raymond's shoes. Would way rather have Byron out there than Raymond.

I think we need to take a fresh look at the ECHL. The Flames are keeping their own franchise as they are looking at it as a developmental league to put some of their legitimate prospects there. I read the Leafs are doing the same thing and probably other teams as well. It will no longer be looked on as a dead end for no talents.

I would pass on signing Ryan Wilson. He hasn't been any better than Nakladal, Wotherspoon or Kulak and the Flames look like they will be overflowing with defensemen in the AHL as it is.
