Don't feed the !@#% wild rabbits!!
As with most parts of Calgary, we have jackrabbits (actually a type of hare) in our community (Royal Oak). Unfortunately for them, one of the homeowners decided that leaving out a ton of carrots on their front lawn every night for them to eat would be a good idea. They ended up moving yesterday; and as I drive home tonight, I see four jackrabbits waiting around her lawn waiting for carrots. There's a little one that was born this year that's been fed virtually exclusively on carrots; it just stood there for about 10 minutes until I tried to drive over it. That one's not going to survive fall, much less winter.
Also, it turns out the hawks have been picking off the jackrabbits while they feed out in the open lawn with their heads down, as the hawks have been leaving all sorts of wonderful rabbit parts in my backyard like limbs, heads and guts.
I phoned the city about this, apparently it's not illegal to feed wildlife in Calgary. I did mention that their front yard and the sidewalk was covered in rabbit poo; a bylaw officer were supposed to do something about that, but it looks like the couple didn't care.
Anyhow, don't feed the damned things. They've infested my community (I've counted over twenty of them in one spot), and now that they're not getting their carrot fill, they're goning to start gnawing on everything else. Fantastic. Stop messing around with wildlife.

Here's a plan, don't call the city. Tell your neighbors to stop feeding the fricken rabbits. If they decline. Throw whatever rabbit guts you find in their yard. In fact put them on their freakin doorstep.

They're not my neighbours. They're a few streets down. I'm not approaching their rabbit poo DMZ - rabbit feces can contain many diseases communicable to humans.
I'm not touching the damn guts - you wanna deal with maggots? I had two swollen, egg sized rabbit eyeballs in my yard. You wanna touch them?

Trust me, if I found the parts before they turned too much, I would've thrown them through an open window.

Got tons of rabbits at my old home in Lethbridge. Lived near the coulees and every year, there would be rabbits on our lawn. Frankly, we looked forward to seeing them every year. But to be ****ed off that they are encroaching onto your land which was their habitat at one time... I dunno. Are they damaging your home? Chewing up your fence at all? If not, then I'd say let em be. Besides, first you said you don't want them to be fed carrots, but on the other hand, you don't want them chewing on other stuff now that the carrots have stopped. Take your pick, cause they won't leave.
There was one year where they didn't come back. That year there was an abnormal amount of stray cats in the neighbourhood. But the only thing they ever did was eat our grass in the shade. We let them be, they let us be.
Stop messing with wildlife you say? You bet, once I stop living in homes.

Rabbits attract the coyotes, who make their way up the riverbank to scout the neighbourhood at night. Them's the critters I worry more about.

The coyotes in town seem rather...habituated...or perhaps know their place with humans. Riding down the bike path into work I've passed coyotes coming the other way right beside the path and they didn't seem to worry about me much or act threatening.
I was also at the university for a meeting in the spring and we were walking between buildings and I saw what I thought was a hilarious site. There was an open lawn with a walkway running through the middle of it. A rabbit/hare was on one side of the grass facing north, there was a coyote on the south side facing south sniffing around some trees. I found it funny because had either one turned around their relaxed attitudes would have changed. It was almost like the walkway was a wall between them.
I suppose the coyotes can be pretty hard on pets who are left to roam..like the guy about a month ago who had his little yappy dog nearly chewed in half. I rather like "the nature" we have in the city. It's a good day if I ride past deer munching on the grass or see a rabbit hop across the bike path in front of me. For a second I forget I live in a city with a million people.

There used to be about 1-3 hares every year for the past four years. Now there are twenty. They used to not hang around the human inhabited areas, but those carrots were too tempting for them. 1-3 hares is manageable (for them too). 20 isn't. They're going to suffer the most from this.
I do let them be. Crazy carrot lady didn't. You think it's a good idea to feed carrots to hares? It's like feeding chocolate bars to a kid. The Alberta Wildlife person I talked to was very disappointed when I told him about it. Unfortunately they can't do anything about it.
And you bet I'm worried about the coyotes coming. A person down the street was attacked by a coyote while walking his dog a couple of years ago about 50 meters from my house. They seemed to have left last year.

Being the owner of a small dog, this freaks me out the most, makes me glad I have a fenced yard. I could not imagine the trauma that would cause myself little lone my dog. But back on topic, I used to really enjoy see the rabbits in my area, but now I just kinda feel sorry for them, theres just so many more then 5 years ago. On my drive to work I can normally see 5-6 flattened rabbits, which is not the most attractive thing in the world. But with all the developent in this city, former habbitat of theses rabbits is no longer there, are they suppose to move?

I think rabbits reproduce in cycles, having a peak around every 7 years or so. Mind you it seems that they have been peaking for the last 2-3 years. I've seen a few coyotes at night in the NW but I'm sure more will be sneaking in, it's a smorgasbord of rabbits.

No problem. Just get some Bobcats to take care of the rabbits. Pretty soon, the rabbits won't be a problem.
What about the bobcats? Get a couple dogs. Then when the bobcats are all gone, go find yourself a gorilla.
The real beauty is how the gorilla will freeze to death over the winter, and your vermin problem comes to an end naturally.

I'll wait until Petsmart has their annual gorilla sale before I do this.

SKINNER
Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
LISA
But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
SKINNER
No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
LISA
But aren't the snakes even worse?
SKINNER
Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
LISA
But then we're stuck with gorillas!
SKINNER
No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

Small update:
Little hare jr. still keeps showing up at the house. It just sits on the edge of the lawn, waiting for someone to feed it. I feel so sorry for it
