Isn't living in the past the exact reason for statues of sports figures?

If there's anything this town definitely needs more of, it's statues of fellers on horses.

Ask any Oiler, or Oiler fan and they'll tell you the past is awsome!

In all seriousness, statues of living people are creepy. The Gretzky one in particular.

The Roger Neilson and Rocket Richard ones are "meh" artistically. I get that Richard had cultural significance that transcended the sport (however reluctantly on his part, he was a humble man). But Neilson? Schmaltz and a bit gauche by an overreaching franchise as far as I'm concerned.

Are there others?

I'm good with an abstract art installation that symbolically connects the sport with Calgarians. I don't think a tacky bronze replication of an individual is necessary.

There are very few players that are worthy of a statue IMO. Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Richard, Howe, maybe Messier.... players of absolutely legendary calibre deserve them. Anything else seems very lame and contrived.

No offence to Roger Neilsen.... but he never won a thing, and his statue is one of a man surrendering? But Vancouver is terrible at everything so I kinda get that one.

The Flames really have never had a player that was a true league legend, that will be discussed and argued as one of the all time greats, league wide, amongst fans and rivals for the next 100 years. To me, those are the players that should get that type of honour.

I believe Pittsburgh has a Lemieux statue out front as well.

He's a freaking hero down there. Went to a game there a few years ago and couldn't believe the response he got.

As far as the OP? I'd pass, given our (lack of) history. Lanny maybe. Or Harvey.

Lanny maybe, but he wasn't "the guy" during the championship.

Iginla has had a legendary career. To end up where he has among the all time goal scorers in the era he played in, and through two lockouts, he is the most deserving.

I'm a little torn if he should get a statue given the lack of Stanley Cup, but if anyone, it's Iggy. But borderline in my mind. I wouldn't be upset if he got one. He is the best Flame of all time.

Maybe a statue of a flame or 6 flames representing the players on the ice.

I'll make it for ... $200 000 plus costs.

Truly game changing players get statues, not people's jersey you retire.

No. No statue either. I don't think we have anyone deserving of being Calgary's Rocky Balboa statue.

Just my opinion but he has been "the guy" for this city ever since, MacInnis, Nieuwendyk, Gilmour, Loob, Mullen..etc. not so much.

Any pro hockey statue in Calgary should begin with the big stash! and it shouldn't be a close vote. Christ, he should get a statue for just being an amazing nice guy.

Again, just my opinion

I think statues are a good idea. I would say anyone who is "forever a flame" plus Peter Maher and Ed Whalen. Maybe Crisp as well. I don't see them as a big deal other than to create a visual way of keeping little bits of the Flames' history and identity around. They're just like big pictures, but better than pictures.

Edit: Also, Harvey. He should have one.

No need for 3 people to do it at once, now you end up with a picture of Lanny surrounded by two guys who couldn't even be bothered to change out of sweats.
