Nazi Gold Train

Didn't see a thread on this, so...

Here's an interesting article from the Vancouver Sun (but perhaps better sourced in the Telegraph) about the possibly imminent vindication of an old WWII legend in Poland - a buried Nazi train filled with stolen gold.

What makes it most interesting is that the find has only been partly verified - what appears to be a train discovered in an underground chamber - and the gold has yet to be confirmed.

Anyway, some interesting Sunday morning reading for those interested in this kind of stuff. I spent a few days in Wroclaw - a beautiful little college town nearby - so have some extra affinity for this news, but hopefully others find it interesting too.

The waterlogged tunnel threading its way beneath the hills of Lower Silesia amounts to a relic of one of Hitler’s most grandiose and futile projects.

This subterranean passage, reached through a pair of black gates, was hacked out of the ground by prisoners and slave labourers.

Their task was to build bunkers and factories under the pine forests of what is today southern Poland, constructing a hiding place where a collapsing Third Reich might secrete its war industries – and its treasures.

A tunnel similar to this one may conceal a train laden with looted gold. Last week, the Polish government said that a man who helped bury the train had disclosed its location shortly before his death. The authorities took a ground-penetrating radar to this spot and, sure enough, a train was detected deep beneath the soil.

Yeah this is crazy. I wasn't aware of that story but knowing some of the crazy old wive tales and urban legends they have there, its crazy to know one of the crazier ones was actually real!

Polish officials are backtracking from last week’s comments over the probable discovery of a buried German Nazi train that local legend says is laden with gold and other loot. But they’re sending in the army to investigate the potential site nevertheless.
New documents about the location of the mystery train, which disappeared 70 years ago, “aren’t any stronger than similar claims made in past decades,” Tomasz Smolarz, the head of the Lower Silesia region’s administration, said at a news conference in Wroclaw, Poland on Monday. His comments come three days after Deputy Culture Minister Piotr Zuchowski said a geo-radar image of the more than 100-meter-long train he saw made the discovery “more than 99 percent certain.”
Regional authorities have “secured” the area around the potential discovery, located in a forest near the Czech border, and will ask the military to investigate it, Smolarz said. Local lore claims that an armored Nazi train loaded with loot went missing in the region after departing from Wroclaw when German forces were in retreat from the Soviet-led Red Army.

This is a fun story though, it would be amazing to see what would be found if there was anything. I wonder what kind of crap storm it would cause though as to who it actually belongs to, I'm guessing the government would lay claim to it while people who it was stolen from would do the same and probably a lot of others.
