I think most would agree. Hopefully it's somewhere in between 6.5 and 8 depending on the term. It's a really strange extension

			Would a front loaded 8 year x 6 million make sense? ~48M6 year x 7 mil ~ 42M.

Would we assume that Gio at age 39 and 40 would play at a level to make that 6 mil difference? It leans slightly in his favor in that regards. I'm just spit balling with an idea of a longer term contract... but I am not sure.

It's hard to guess. Treliving is a freaking wizard, Gio has a body of a Grecian God which might be immune to magic...

The body that can't play +60 games a season?

I don't think I'd be happy with that, at all. Cap hit will likely be way too high in the last 2-3 years of that deal.

Damn, your threshold for sarcastic comment was just a little off! He usually gets passed 60!

If a deal is already in place, I wonder if they'll announce it at the Calgary Next event tomorrow.

Well, I guess we wait to see what the real contract is then.

The anticipation is killing me to know what his contract will be. Previously Kipper's contract of 6yrs x 5.8 cap hit (35mil total) was the biggest contract in Flames history. He was 31 at the time. If Gio's ends up being the biggest in Flames history, that's a scary thought. He's 33 years old...
I still think it will be between 6-6.5 mil cap hit.

Also speculation there will be no announcement until all parties are in Calgary and available for the presser.

Just an FYI for those interested.
 |
Waiting to see what the general reaction is to the arena announcement. If it's overwhelmingly negative, they'll distract everyone by announcing the Gio contract right away. If the reaction is positive, they'll wait.

It's got to be more than Dougie's 5.75 fine just out of principle. Hopefully somewhere in the mid 6 range and that would be great. I wonder if there would be an internal cap similar to the Iginla days where Gio is the highest player on the team and we move from there.

9x8x6x5x4Takes him to 37 with a 6.4 cap hit. Paying probably one more year than you would want but the cap hit is team friendly.

Should mention this is my guess

He's 31. Or did you mean he'll be 33 when the new contract kicks in?

It'll be more than 5.75 because Gio won't sign that deal, not out of principle.

He is turning 32 before the season starts so for the extension he will be 33 once he starts collecting the salary on the extension. Unless they offer him the contract up front in bonus money like ROR.

Original guess was for something like $7.5M AAV/ 6 years, adjusted for Treliving wizardry was $6.75 over 5 years. Gonna have to go with the safe option first at 7.5/6, but there's always a chance for Treliving to put on his 'Deal with It' shades and pull off some magic. You can never tell with Gio's agent though.

I really hope they can keep it to a 5 year deal. 5 x $7 seems perfect. Definitely no more than $7.5/yr

Last year would need to be $4.5M as it cannot be less than 50% of the highest year. Otherwise i like this contract. Would have a $6.5M Cap hit

Yep, that's exactly what I stated in my post, I was just wondering if Huntingwhale thought he was 33 right now as that's how his post was worded.
