Default National Post: ISIS and Rape

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/wo...lt-as-virtuous

i dont even know what to say i'm so angry.

Quote:
Because the preteen girl practiced a religion other than Islam, the Quran not only gave him the right to rape her - it condoned and encouraged it, he said
Quote:
A total of 5,270 Yazidis were abducted last year, and at least 3,144 are still being held, according to community leaders. To handle them, ISIL has developed a detailed bureaucracy of sex slavery, including sales contracts notarized by ISIL-run Islamic courts. And the practice has become an established recruiting tool to lure men from deeply conservative Muslim societies, where casual sex is taboo and dating is forbidden

A world without religion would be a glorious place.

EDIT: Not implying this hypothetical world would be any less cruel. I'm just sick of psychopaths using the "my God said this is okay" justification

There's plenty of stuff in the Hadiths about Muhammad keeping / using / trading in sex slaves. The following is apparently from a pamphlet published by Isis last year:

Quote:
Question 13: Is it permissible to have intercourse with a female slave who has not reached puberty?

It is permissible to have intercourse with the female slave who hasn’t reached puberty if she is fit for intercourse; however if she is not fit for intercourse, then it is enough to enjoy her without intercourse.

Which may have been forward thinking at the time considering the society that existed. Isis trying to roll back the clock though for their personal benefit is pitiful.

I think you misunderstand - I don't believe for a second that this is a cynical attempt to massage passages from holy scripture to suit their desire to have sex with pre-teen girls. Not consciously, anyway. They really, completely believe that this is the right thing to do and that it will bring them closer to God as they understand Him.

It's almost impossible to comprehend coming from a secular Western background that these beliefs could be as self-evident to these people as 2+2=4 is to you and me, but that's really what we're talking about here.

I edited my post so it's more clear and I wasn't trying to attack you in anyway, if that was the way it was interpreted by chance.

Yeah, these guys are true believers in their own minds. I think that their living on the edge feeds their misplaced experience and they are experiencing something otherwise they wouldn't have a motive for what they do. They feel that they are doing gods work, so they are above any moral code.

Speaking of modern day slavery, it still exists in Islamic Mauritania in a large way.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Mauritania

Here's what wikipedia says about Islam and slavery.

One of the five pillars of Islam zakat is meant to encourage Muslims to donate money to free slaves and bonded labourers in countries where slaves and bonded labourers may have existed. In the hope that over time there will be no slaves left in that country.

Here's a bit of a story.

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/mauritan...sehBbb&v=63383

Quote:
I became a slave at age 5. Every day I looked after the herd. Every night I was raped by my master. I always thought, without understanding, that this was normal.

In Mauritania, where I’m from, hundreds of thousands of people are still held this way today. But I was lucky. My brother escaped his masters and found an organisation working to stop slavery. He asked them to help free me. But when they came to take me away, at first I completely refused. I couldn’t imagine a life away from my masters, a life where you worked no matter what, even if pregnant or giving birth. This was the only life I had ever known.

Dude... This has nothing to do with religion... This is fascism and hatred. If it wasn't religion they'd find another excuse for this barbarism.

These monsters have done so many mental acrobatics to get themselves to this point, and it couldn't be further from the teachings of any religion.

This is society devolved to it's most barbaric.

Its ok to criticize and blast Islam without going all PC. There are sure to be plenty of threads in the future that focus on the lunacy of other specific religions.

I wholeheartedly agree, with one key differentiation. It's not the specific religion (though it's rife with violent themes), rather the central tenet to every religion: suspend reason and put a higher power above all else. It's that worldview that allows these people to gladly swallow down any any shred of humanity and it belongs to all religions (though not religions alone)

It's for that reason in particular I became atheist and realized my beliefs were more indoctrination than truth.

There are millions of very good people who are religious. That doesn't change the "goodness" of putting an imaginary person ahead of all laws and morality. Similar to the gun debate: millions of lawful gun owners, but guns still cause mass destruction

It absolutely has everything to do with religion. You realize that these are direct quotes from the Koran and the Hadith right? These guys aren't casting around looking for another fascist manifesto to glom onto so that they can justify acting like animals. They have all they need in the 'holy' books they've been raised and indoctrinated into since childhood. For these guys, it starts and stops with a cherry picking of Islam that fits their brand of barbarity. But its still Islam.

Makes the stories about teenage girls running away to join ISIS even more confusing.

They believe they are doing God's will. I assume that the actually wives of the fighters are treated marginally better than the infidel slave girls.

This is so annoying. First of all, you posted this immediately after I quoted directly from the teachings of the religion, condoning this behavior. It's patently obvious you're wrong.

I don't know where this meme got started or how it became fashionable but it makes absolutely no sense. Of course it "has to do" with religion - specific passages, tenets of a religious faith are the impetus for this behavior. The fact that there are other factors in play - economics, historical conflicts, ethnic feuds and whatever else you can think of - does not eliminate the major role religion plays in this behavior.

Dismissing them all as brutes - as if no matter what they believed, people from a certain part of the world are predisposed to barbarism somehow - smacks of the bigotry of low expectations.

In debates, Hitchens used to use the quote, “in the ordinary moral universe, the good will do the best they can, the worst will do the worst they can, but if you want to make good people do wicked things, you’ll need religion”. Apt.

The Quaran has a lot of damning passages when it comes to the subject of rape, especially slaves and prisoners of war. Isis is taking passages directly from their holy book.

To say it has nothing to do with religion is a stretch.

To be fair, it's hard to judge their motivations unless you're them. Add in that there's no way to follow any holy book 100% as they are rife with contradictions and I think it's fair to say ISIS takes what they want from the Quran in order to justify their actions. Is it because they really believe it or are using it as an excuse? Does it matter?
