It would kinda suck to be a female TV reporter right now with all of the FHRITP crap; you might feel like you're a bit of a target every time you're in front of the camera at a public event. You might be more or less treated like any other woman (for better or worse) through most of your day, but the moment there's a rolling camera in front of you, there's an increased likelihood that some idiot is going to try to take advantage of the situation and do something that goes beyond the boundaries of acceptable interaction. So yeah, I support her on this: it's absolutely stupid that female journalists have somehow become a target through absolutely no fault of their own. This might not be as offensive as a FHRITP bomb (or it may be, depending on your perspective), but if you're the victim of it, the difference is probably immaterial.

By the looks of the dude, I don't think he has a career type job to get fired from. That guy can't be older than 21 or 22, prob a college student. Also kinda looks like a bit of a pretty boy, he probably thought in his drunk, cocky mind that she'd be flattered because of that.

I doubt there was much thought or intent beyond "Dare ya to kiss that reporter on camera, bro."

EDIT: ^lol, yes one is no excuse for the other but on these "live" on location reports, what is the goal if not a viral video?

You are letting your imagination run a bit wild here. News channels set up a camera in front of where the story is dozens of times a night. This is standard operating procedure for the media and has been for decades. They aren't looking for a viral video hoping a random person walking by harasses them while they are trying to do their job. I am sure it's already a pain trying to do a news report in public without people interrupting you, yelling, honking etc.

Yup, probably. I just bet he didn't expect her to react this negatively regarding it (unlike the FHRITP guys, who I'm sure knew she would be mad). Though of course both instances were probably thought up through hazy beer goggles.

You didn't say it initially. I was replying to sliver who equated it to kissing his Grandmother. You then said I was changing the narrative and I responded by mentioning that I wasn't changing it any more than the guy I initially quoted.

You chose to jump in in the middle so I assumed you agreed with his post.

If you're trying to capitalize on being "on the scene" then don't bitch when "the scene" doesn't cooperate. Just like they're allowed to film me in a public space, I'm allowed to do whatever the #### I want in said public space as long as it's in the confines of the law (this unwanted touching obviously isn't).

I think everyone who is saying that CBC is just reacting this strongly to try and deter people from doing stuff like this in the future but using this incident as a way to champion this cause is some extra level of stupid and I'll be surprised if their campaign raises any sort of outcry.

It's a kiss on the cheek that missed. Get your pitchforks everyone

I said a peck on the cheek - be it on your grandma or a stranger - is not sexual. That doesn't mean I think it's okay the guy kissed the reporter; it means I don't think he sexually assaulted her.

FHRITP has nothing to do with female reporters...stupid as it is to begin with its just about saying something offensive on live TV.

All these news organizations on their high moral ground now after years of hiring bimbo reporters for their looks/ratings

Pretty much all women TV reporters are thin and attractive while there are tons of fat slob men reporters...look at the sports reporters for god sakes, good looking women if an average looking one gets hired people make jokes (on this very messageboard in fact)

The reporter is on the news right now...

The kid (he was 17) has apologized and she says "he understands that he was in the wrong and he's embarrassed and that's good enough for me" and "I don't see pursuing any criminal charges...".

"Ultimately, in my daily job, do you want someone running up to me and kissing you on the cheek, a smack in the face, yelling at you... it's not an alright thing to do, too many colleagues are being affected...".

That's pretty loosey-goosey paraphrasing, but that's the gist of it. They will both be on "As It Happens" on CBC radio tonight.

No, of course that would not be okay. In the same way it is not okay that this festival-goer kissed the reporter. This may have been an assault on the reporter, but I don't view it as a sexual assault because pecks on the cheek aren't sexual.

Well, it looks like those of us who didn't think it was a big deal were right and the guys pretending this was a violent rape were wrong since a simple apology from the kid made it all go away.

You chose to jump in in the middle so I assumed you agreed with his post.

"You didn't say it initially" NO, I didn't say at all

You would have assumed wrong I'm afraid, I was just reworking your question to a more fair question that could be applied and asked.

When it comes to parents, if you have a drunk men going around kissing children on the playground it brings up a lot of alarming warning bells that any parent should be taking notice of... I think my example is a much more fair question then trying to tie this into a child molester type fears witch your example would easily set off.

Ask a question but by stretching it so farit no longer becomes a fair question... defeats the purpose of asking because no one will answer it.

I haven't seen anyone suggest that. Just that an unwanted kiss on the cheek (or anywhere) can be technically sexual assault. It's not up to the perp to decide, it's the law and she was justified in making her complaint.

Anyway, little kiss or big kiss, it's not the point. Would a little pat on the bum or a gentle breast squeeze be less of a sexual assault than big one? It's really up to the woman to know if she felt violated in the situation.
