Celebrated Square Root Day

Hahaha, nooooooooooooooooooooo! I don't know why but I really thought this was the bump.
I'm more optimistic than most these days. I've heard early August is the for reals time for release of the renderings. Since it's early august and the beginning of the week I saw it bumped and went "yesss!!".
Who bumps a four day old thread to say "beach volleyball?", lol.

I was away for the weekend and it was on the first page. Not really a necro-bump, but I'm flattered that you think I'd be the one with inside info.

CMLC really wants to stay employed and develop West Village as their new project as the East Village re-development is nearing completion. I heard that they are lobbying Council to let them do it. However; easier said than done. West Village is so severely contaminated with creosote and other hydrocarbons, the clean-up costs alone are estimated at $250M. That's before any infrastructure construction and development costs. There is no money allocated for this project in the municipal budget anywhere yet (although most of the land in the area has been purchased). Borrowing this much scares many Council members (and rightly so). Plus, there are no indications that provincial funding will be available either.
I don't believe we will hear the "big" announcement for a few more years. This thread will be perennial for a while, I'm afraid.

Once it's publicly announced it's just going to come from whoever sees the announcement and posts first, not necessarily an insider. So basically sureloss, but you never know, he's been beat before.

A few more years for the big announcement? Haha, would you like to put some money on that? I'd be down. All 'waiting for an annoucement' jokes aside, (and yes I realize how long it's been) we're not years away from an announcement at this point.

Something tells me "the" bump will be a new thread. This thread is just for teasing and us poor saps getting our hopes up.

I've been hearing lots of speculation that it's actually close to being announced. Hope it's true

Leave emotions out and look at the facts before betting money:
- This is a massively expensive major re-development project that will likely cost a few billion dollars.
- The City of Calgary does not have this money in its 3-yr capital budget, 6-yr budget (draft) and 10-yr budget wish list; plus, there is no co-funding commitment from Federal or Provincial government.
- The above means that the new arena and borrowing for its development would have to become part of someone's political platform introduced for the new municipal elections. Chances it could be approved before the new elections are close to zero.
- Flames organization will not/cannot invest much of its own money in the re-development, as they are not in control of it, just one tenant for one of the facilities in the proposed Entertainment District. They will not announce anything until they have a financial commitment from all three levels of government. To get all three of them on-side is still a long way away, otherwise we'd hear more by now from at least some sources. There's nothing yet other than Ken King's unbridled optimism.
- On a positive side, Harper seems to be in a Santa Claus mood prior to the October elections; there is a small chance he'll announce some co-funding this summer, but not likely.
- Also, on a positive side, Flames are playing better. As they continue to improve, it should make approval of spending and capital borrowing for their purposes more palatable for politicians and voters.

What? Leaving emotions out of it is why I believe (because of the buzz and people close to the project being more vocal) it is soon.
If I was going on emotion I'd be screaming "It's never going to happen!!!! You've let me down too many times!!!".

Costs
- $250M for land cleanup (government responsibility)
- $300M for stadium
- $500M for arena
- ???? for road rerouting (government responsibility)
Flames are looking at less than 1B for their part of the expenses.

I highly doubt the development is less than 1B. It will be more for sure.

Lol at the people with 'inside info'.

Yeah, thanks, sure you know the whole plan.

It's their responsibility only if they do decide to develop it or to sell it (unless they sell it "as is"). They don't have to clean it up otherwise. In its current use, it can stay contaminated forever (or for as long as environmental legislation allows).

Except there's evidence that creosote is starting to leach across the river and has been found in the soil in West Hillhurst: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...ners-1.2494446
Something needs to be done one way or another.
