Like when they signed Sykora. They wait until other teams fill up and they are the last resort still willing to spend, then they parade them around saying; "See, good free agents do want to sign here!".

You say 8M isn't Holtby's starting point, but then you go on to describe how the team and player come up with numbers that are exactly that, a starting point for negotiations. If one side is just way out of whack, you end up with what is called a non starter. I can't meet you in the middle if your crazy starting point makes the middle insanely high.
BTW, how did we end up discussing free agency and arbitration on a trade thread???

Semin totally does not fit the Flames hard working, "always earned, never given" culture.

That remains to be seen. Most analysts view the guys they took as significant reaches.

I can't believe they didn't use 1 of their 3 picks on Barzal or Connor. Instead they took 3 "meh" players in a row.

Zboril was a good pick. Debrusk looked good in their development camp. Why Senyshen though??! Weird...

Senyshen is a very skilled player in his own right, just buried on a deep OHL team.

He's a good kid but not as good as Barzal/Connor. Chances were high that he'd have dropped to about 45 overall...which, of course, we gave them.
Massive fail from Sweeney.

Depends on what Boston's scouting department values, though. Maybe they thought both those guys are too "pass-first" or "perimeter". Every department values players differently. To be honest I was just as shocked when New Jersey passed those two players up for Zacha. The Flames definitely value skilled players like that, but there's more than one way to skin a cat.
There really is no "Board"

Well, I disagree on that. Due to his status as the biggest sleeper in the draft, the chances of him being there at 45 were about the same as Barzal being there at 15... something we were crossing fingers for but not realistic. I mean the latter happened, but should not have happened.

I was thinking that he might climb into the first round in the 20-25 range, much like how we took Poirier and Jankowski.
Between the three, I would have easily taken Barzal and Connor ahead of him, but I don't know how much further he would have fallen.

I think the Bruins wasted 2 of their picks. Snychsnych would have most likely been there at 45 and most everywhere had him as a kid second pick. Zboril was their best pick and Carlo will probably end up as their second best pick.

I too find the skipping of Barzal and Connor confounding but Senyshyn is an easy argument to make for player going really high. Ticks a lot of high end skill boxes and has good size.
And it just goes to show that the concensus lists that fly around pre draft really have no bearing on individual teams' scouting.
Them getting Carlo in the 2nd was huge. Boston went real heavy on RH type players with Senyshyn, Carlo and Jakub Forsbaka-Karlsson.
Outside of 13-15 they really did a great job stockpiling players. And plenty of folks were keen on Zboril too. Only player I still scratch my head at after some time has passed was them taking DeBrusk.

Sorry to assist everyone else in derailing this thread!
Bostons draft looks very sketchy. Every one laughs at them. I dont blame those who laugh.
Yet these are prospects. In 3 years time Boston might of had the best draft of any team. I wouldnt bet on it, but stranger things have happened ( not many ). People say there is a draft board, and one that goes off board it is assumed they made a mistake.
Knowing what we know today? Gaudreau Brodie Russell Wideman Gio should instantly tell you drafting is more of an art than a science. Lets add these gems Tim Erixon, Greg Nemisz, Brent Krahn, Leland Irving, Matt Pelech, Kris Chucko, Oleg Saprykin.
In fact have a look at our drafting, please do not read if you are going to bed soon, dont want you to have nightmares!

I believe in the Pony Power

I know its early but that 2014 draft good end up being huge for this franchise.
Bennett - going to be a good player. Just a matter of how good.
McDonald - great progression. Goalies are wild cards, but on track.
Smith - Unique player with a lethal combination of size and some skill.
Hickey - One of the highest risers since that draft. Looks like an absolute steal
Mattson - A guy no one talks about but could be a 5/6 stay at home type
Carroll - Flames seem to love this guy and believe he's going to be a player. Great progession last year.
Not. Too. Shabby.

And I knew better at the time, but it felt so disappointing. No Gaudreau-like Hail Mary pass, no intriguing guys. I just didn't feel like they were good picks. Probably why I scout for the Oilers.

Speculation that Alex Chiasson will be offered up in trade talks if he gets close to his ask of $2.475 million in arbitration
http://www.ottawasun.com/2015/07/23/...ithin-48-hours
Quote:
Under the CBA, the Senators would not be able to walk away from Chiasson's contract because it will be under $3.5 million, but they would rather move him than pay him approximately 2 1/2 times more than they gave in his first year with the team.

Minor signing: The Caps signed Ryan Stanton from the Canucks today.

Chiasson is intriguing. He's a big, young, RW. I am not sure what the asking price would be but I think a few teams would be interested. Hard to say whether he will top out at 30-40 points or if he's got the potential to do a bit more. I watched him a few times with Dallas but didn't see much of him in Ottawa - anyone have any insight on how he played last season? Seemed to take a bit of a step back.

Seems like something the Flames could use though (depending on price of course)
