I have no idea what it's like now, but sometimes there are good deals on quality suits at https://www.hautelook.com. You're going to have to pay to get it tailored and adjusted to fit properly, but when you're saving upwards of 50% off the MSRP and still getting decent quality, it's hard to complain.

Honestly, for young people on a budget and who like slim fitting, ultra-modern fashions...I have bought several suits at H&M. I own some bespoke (made from scratch from my measurements) cashmere/wool suits but I wear these even less often than my H&M suits because it's cheap enough to buy a new style every now and then. It's disposable clothing at the core and I know the whole ethical argument against that...but I find a lot more value and utility in that. I even bought a Tuxedo there (including fancy shirt and bow tie) when I had to attend the one formal event that comes up every 5 years and people can't tell the difference. Cheaper than a rental and way more fashionable, modern, and slim fitting than the horrible rentals that make you look like you are going to a red-neck wedding.

That will at least give you 2-3 options so you aren't wearing the same thing every freaking game day. It's also cheap enough so that you can experiment to see what you like.

I remember my first real suit purchase was for my high school grad and that was a colossal failure and expense. If your body fits off the rack, go off the rack and it will save you a ton and give you a lot more choice.

I bought my first suit from Banana republic...they have slimmer fitting suits, and they have 40% off sales all the time, so while they seem sort of expensive, after getting discounts, they're pretty reasonable.

I'm surprised by that (bolded).
Well unless you grew out of it? ordered it in an obnoxious loud colour-way?, or requested a trendy fit balloon/ultra-euro?

A proper bespoke suit, should never go out of style. I have two from Umberto's, and adore them.

Hack&Lube must weigh about 90lbs to make those H&M suits work. They are ridiculously slim.

It wasn't a self control issue. It was a sale and I needed a suit, but if I had known in the end that it was going to suck I wouldn't have bought it then.

I lol'd.

I have lost a lot of weight this year and am down to a comfortable 160. I look at those H&M suits and think "you have got to be f'n kidding me".

So, instead of asking opinions on a specific brand, which stores should I be shopping at? I am a fairly new executive and wear a suit daily. Currently, I have 6 suits, 3 sport coats, and several poorly fitting slacks. My tastes and needs have moved beyond the Moore's/Tip Top stuff but I am struggling to justify dropping $1000+ on a suit. I am comfortable, however, spending around $500 and find The Bay has good selection and value.

Anywhere else I should be shopping? Any advice is appreciated.

One way to look at it is the usage of a suit rather than the final price. Some of us cannot justify the extra cost of a suit because we use it maybe 5 times a year.

If we use the previous user's anectdote of $120 rental per day...

Average schmo like me...
$700 suit / 5 times = $140 per use. Might as well rent at $120 per day if keeping it for only 1 year.

But for bax's situation...
$700 suit / 35 times = $20 per use. Renting at $120 is complete BS. (haven't factored in after year 1 either)
$1400 suit/35 times = $40 per use. Renting is still BS
$2800 suit/35 times = $80 per use. Renting is still BS.

One way to look at it.

No dude. That is a self-control issue. I don't buy things until I know they won't suck.

I have a related self control issue regarding the purchase of clothing items BECAUSE I know it won't suck, regardless of whether I actually need it.

If I happen to come across a pair of whiskey shell Aldens in my size for example I'll probably just instabuy.

I don't make that kind of coin yet, but I almost bought some Aldens shell cordovan gunboats today.

From where?

I wear Alden shell 95% of the time (and one pair of C&J shell). There are much pricier shoes out there and none of them are sturdier.

I am not giving up my source. Where do you get C&J in Calgary?

Your self control "issue" then. Man you come off like a pompous ass.

I will now read all of your posts using Merril's voice.

I know O'Connors carries Alden but I don't think they have shell unless you get a special order made.

I bought them online a few years ago; they're actually RL Marlow wingtips, which are made by C&J.

I don't know how your grandfather dressed but judging by what I inherited, my grandfather's 1960s, English-made suits are even more trendy/tight-fitting than H&M's! They were actually ultra-euro.

I'm a healthy 160 lbs but wear the 2nd smallest size at H&M/Zara (36). I don't wear my cashmere suits unless to a rare formal event because I'm paranoid about getting them dirty/damaged.

What are everyone's thoughts on jacket sizes? My chest is about a 42-43, which is up from the 38 it used to be. Some style guides I've read have recommended buying 38 and then having it let out. Opinions on this? Keep in mind I'm 5'8" and bounce between 175 and 180.

No. And height and weight is useless; a guy your height and weight could be a 36 or a 42, it's meaningless information for these purposes.

First of all, whatever you do, buy a jacket where the shoulders fit. Everything else can be fixed, within reason.

In terms of chest size, the label is just sort of an approximate guess. What you really want to do is find a jacket that actually fits (if you don't know what that feels or looks like, find someone who does to tell you), and then measure armpit to armpit. Then you'll be in pretty good shape to determine whether a future jacket will fit.

See here: http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/c...sure-a-jacket/

So, I need a white suit. It's a long story, but none the less, it has to be all white and on me by the end of the month. Places I've already looked, the trunk of my Delorean, the local Kingdom Hall garage sale, the lost and found at Studio 54. These people are serious too. It has to be totally white. Shoes, belts, ties, everything. Any ideas?

Given that it sounds like a gag costume thing... I'd just go with the internet.
