The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed 2015 draft pick Oliver Kylington.
Kylington, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, split the 2014-15 season between Farjestads (SweHL) and AIK (Swe-1) and represented Sweden at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship registering a pair of assists in five games. Kylington was Calgary’s 2nd round selection (60th overall) in this year’s NHL Draft.

Just keep saying his name over and over in your head and "Shillington" will become second nature.
Worked for me.

When was the last time we signed a 2nd rounder right out of the draft like that? I don't imagine that it happens very often.
I think this a clear indication that the Flames want more to try and control his development more. Hopefully AIK is onboard with the wished of Kylington and the Flames as well.

I'm very interested to see how he does. I'm still shocked we got him at 60.

I believe we will see him suit up for at least 1 game this year in the NHL.
It's an unsubstantiated feeling, but if the belief is there that he has the skill to play in the NHL and the experience of playing against men, the best place for his development might be in the NHL surrounded by NHLers.
I think it's likely they test him to see what he brings in Camp. If he's close to earning a spot, I think they make room for him.

Even the AHL is a bit of a stretch at this point in his development. I say there is between 0 and 1% chance of him playing an NHL game next season.
Just because he has NHL caliber skating doesn't mean he's ready for the NHL. It sounds like he has a lot to learn still and can develop further in the AHL, WHL or SEL.

We have seen guys like Hanowski, Van Brabant and Agostino play NHL games in the past couple seasons. Being NHL ready and playing NHL games are not always the same thing. If he spends the year in Stockton, I could see him suiting up for a couple games late in the season as well, just to give him a taste of the level and a measuring stick to aspire to.

^^ I would be happy for him to go to Brandon and progress from there. Most accounts have him as a bit of a project, from a hockey IQ/game management perspective. No need to throw him in the deep end just yet.

Pfft, throw him out there with Gio for the first 8 games and see how he does. Life's too short, aim for the fences.

Yes but they were 22-23 years old graduating from college.. Way different situations.
There's 3 leagues he can be in next season. He would only be eligible for this scenario if he joined the AHL. Unless he really impresses in the AHL (if he even goes to the AHL) there will be other prospects getting that call-up. Culkin, Kulak, Morrison, Nakladal, Wotherspoon and Seiloff will also be in a position to get called up for a cup of coffee. Hickey may even sign after his NCAA season and would very likely be ahead of Kylington in the NHL ready department.

ISS Rankings of Kylington:
October, 2014: 5th. Ahead of him were McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin, and Barzal.
November, 2014: 7th. Werenski and Stome moved ahead.
December, 2014: 7th.
January, 2015: 12th. Crouse, Rantanen, Marner, Provorov, and Zacha jumped ahead.
February, 2015. 12th.
March, 2015. 24th. This was his biggest drop.
April, 2015. 24th.
May, 2015: Outside top 30.
June, 2015: Outside top 30.
Draft Day: 60th.
I find it quite interesting that Kylington dropped from #5 to #60 in only 8-9 months.
He also dropped from 24th to 60th in less than 3 months, when far less hockey was being played.
He's certainly a project but he has a ton of upside. That's why the Flames were smart to get him to North America this year. Another great move by BT.

Treliving on 960:
contract opens up options in terms of development
ultimately Oliver is still under contract with AIK
by the terms of the transfer agreement Flames can sign him while he has a contract to AIK
If the Flames decide to assign him to AHL or WHL (i.e. does not stick in the NHL) he must be offered back to AIK because he is not a 1st round pick
Will participate in Penticton and main camp
Need to discuss things with people in Sweden to see where he ends up.
Will try and make best decision for Oliver's development
Thought he came into development camp and looked good
Elite skater but 18 years old
Needs physical development and development in playing in his own end
By signing him now, it gives Flames better options
Need patience
Fact they signed him today does not mean they are going to push him into the line up
He needs time

On Fan 960 Treliving says the signing "opens up options". Oliver has a contract with AIK (2nd division in Sweden). Flames have signed him, but as he is not a 1st round pick - if he doesn't stick with the Flames (after rookie and main camp) he has to first be offered to AIK - before he could be assigned to Stockton or Brandon. But sounds like they are hopeful that they can negotiate with AIK.

This is what gives me the most hope. He was dropping after the season, for the most part. Still a project and I don't think he has much of a hope this year to make the big club, but well worth the risk at 60.

To heck with making the playoffs if he costs us 8 pts in the Standings it still would be great to say that a #60 draft picked that everyone in the league passed on twice is in the NHL as an 18 year old!!!
Not rushing the kids and giving them time to grow and develop is way too overrated!!
Brodie would have had a couple of norris trophies by now if he would have skipped those last 2 years in the OHL and that wasted yr in the AHL.

Treliving says he dropped in the draft ranking due to a difficult year and being on different teams. Flames had him ranked higher than where they picked him. They like his skating, but there are still areas he needs to learn more ie. playing without the puck, becoming more physical etc. But the Flames are high on his offensive instincts.

I mean technically, teams like the Rangers, Penguins, Blackhawks, Oilers and Flames only passed on him once.
