Never said anything about NHL caliber defensemen.

Too many defencemen. Not enough men who play defence.

So according to TSN the Sekera deal is "palatable" while the Flames "overpaid" on Frolik. I guess McDavid makes them a special team again?
Edit: appears the TSN/Edmonton love fest is back in full force.

They clearly have not been paying attention.
I'm going to love watching them eat their words when the Oilers are languishing in the Western Conference basement by Halloween again.
I wonder what excuse it'll be this time?

Yup love how they are praising the Oilers for finally trying to fix defense and goaltending.
Not sure how this year is any different than them signing Ference, Visnovsky, Nikitin, Souray, Fayne, Khabibulin, Scrivens, Fasth, etc
Remains to be seen if it works out, and their management is much better, but really this is just a Flashback to 5 years ago.

If nothing else, it shows Chiarelli knows what the Oilers problems are. Lowe and MacTavish would still be convinced Schultz is a future Norris winner when the rest of the world knows he's barely NHL calibre at defence - its just the few points he puts up that keeps him out of the AHL.
Sekera at $33 million is about what you would expect to pay on July 1, so while it is a tad high, I can't trash the Oilers too much for it. But it does underscore the bargain we got with Hamilton's contract.

While the contract isnt terrible, Sekera is just another complimentary player, they havent addressed the fact that they need a 25 minutes a night meant and potatoes Dman who is going to be doing all the heavy lifting.

No, but Boston has run out of meat and potatoes guys to sell, and nobody else is dumb enough to part with such players.
But it does make Edmonton better. Not playoffs better, but better.

Oh absolutely, so long as Sekera doesnt turn into Nikitin V2.0 then he'll make the team better. Just marginally.
It isnt going to be a night and day kind of thing.

Sekera is an upgrade for Edmonton.
Probably be on their 1st pairing but in relation to what the Flames have built. Just based on depth he would be on our 3rd.
Gio Brodie he wouldn't bump out.
Hamilton Wideman he would only bump out Wideman due to longevity in a year.
Russell I like more and especially for the money than Sekera.
So Engellend then i guess, but Engelland proved how he can be reliable with the right pairing.
So for the Oilers Sekera is an upgrade but he wouldn't be for the Flames.
That's just the way i see it.
Much much more happier with the addition of Hamilton in fact if Hamilton was a FA he would have been the #1 available player by a wide margin.

It's not a bad signing by the Oilers, you can't compare it to the Hamilton one which was a steal. Sekera is UFA and it's probably around market. The NMC is somewhat worrying at the length of the contract, but that about it.
That said, I do think he takes a step back on the Oilers when they throw him to the fire and it could look like a bad signing unless they do something to get him some help. He's not first paring, and he will be there.

Hes their defacto #1 Dman.

The Oilers need NHL caliber d-men in the worst way, so this is a great signing for them. He may not be a #1 guy, but he's definitely a top 4 guy on a good team. He'll probably be a 1/2 guy on the OIlers, which just goes to show how much more work they need to do, but at least this is a step in the right direction for them.
