In this same interview, Millions did mention that Gio's agent is Ritch Winter, and that could be the wild card in all of this.

Don't know anything about the agent. What kind of wild card are we talking about here?

If he wants $9mil, let's see how half the season goes and see if that number is worth it. I'd be a little hesitant to throw superstar money to a guy who will be 32 to start the season.

Personally, I'm not too worried.

Sure but you gotta show some loyalty to a team! no? Maybe I'm being naive but...
-Flames gave him a chance as un-drafted guy.
-Brought him back after the Russian fiasco.
-Gave him a fair contract last time, 20 mill over 5 years. When he was a 30 point player.
-Except the lockout season, he's missed 20 games a year last 3 years.
-Made him a captain.
Love Gio as much as the next guy but if his demands stay around 9 mill, I hope they make him available this summer to maximize his value. There's no way that will fit in this team's salary structure moving forward.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Anyone over the age of 25 is expendable if they don't fit in terms of dollars. Gio is a top defenseman, but the Flames do have 3 #1 defenders, and you could likely get a couple of top D prospects or something if you were to trade him.

I like Giordano but he needs to be realistic due to his injury history. Hopefully there is middle ground that works for all parties.

Iginla's agent is Newport Sports Don Meehan. Winter represents Carey Price, Brent Seabrook, Bouma and mostly second tier players after that. Don Meehan is the most professional guy out there, Ritch Wnter not so much.

Based on what we have seen so far, Treliving seems to be very conscious of the big financial picture (which is not surprising, given dad). Therefore, I am quite confident we are not going to be stuck with a 40 year-old counting for $8M against the cap. In Brad I trust. In particular, I don't think there is any chance Giordano's contract will be more than 4/5 years - they would definitely want him coming off the books before they have to give new deals to Hamilton/Brodie.

Gio in Calgary with the situation now seems to me like a four year, $7 million deal.
Sure, he might find more term and money with a different city, but there's no telling how good a fit that would be, anywhere, and anything less else than a cup contending team/cup run could = negative pressure and an uncomfortable environment and really, what is that worth to endure. Things I might consider were I in his shoes.
I'll bet he re-signs with the Flames. It's a damn good situation in Calgary.

I don't think he meant that as a positive spin.

In my opinion it's a win/win.
Treliving is going to be working all summer to get Gio signed.
If we can sign him, we have one of the top d men in the league for the next 4-5 years.
If we can't he will fetch a kings ransom from a team like Detroit.

I think Winter has an abrasive personality, and can be difficult to deal with at times. A hard nosed negotiator probably.
Anyways, I've never met the guy myself, but that was the tone Millions had IMO.
Winter took to twitter a few years back and shredded the Flames IIRC, of course looking back at it, he wasn't wrong with most of what he said, but still...seemed like a dick move.

That's right, it wasn't a positive spin. Sorry if my post came off that it was.

Separating being a fan of the player from the situation, Gio has a long history of significant injuries and that is a concern. That isn't as big a deal if his contract is workable (say 7 or so), especially 2-3 years from now. It is a big deal if he's getting 9 million and can't stay healthy because nobody will touch that, just like the Kings with Richards, or the Hurricanes with Semin.
Worst case scenario is the Flames have to trade him for a great return. He is one of the top D-men in the league, and there are 30 teams that would want him on their team. You could likely get a huge return from Detroit if you needed to move him.
Ideally they would be able to come to a deal in the 7-7.5 mil per range over 4-5 years. The only players that I would want getting 9 million is Gaudreau and Monahan in 7-8 years after their likely new contracts expire.
