Has he gone to court yet? Has he been proven guilty? If the answer is no then they have no grounds to void his contract.

No, which leads me to believe this isn't an issue of him breaking the law (or at least being caught by the police breaking the law, perhaps the team caught him).
EDIT: I guess if it was an incident at the border law enforcement was definitely involved. I really have no idea what the crap is going on here.

so we have
1) the 'incident' occurred at the border
2) it was 'shocking'
3) it was not a felony
4) it was worse than being charged with domestic abuse or possession
Man, I really don't know.

I wouldn't say this is definitely true. The Kings are desperate to get rid of Richards' contract. They weren't in that same situation with Voynov. They could afford to "wait and see" with him.

True, I just don't know about the league just agreeing with them so easily. They stuck with the Voynov thing for at least a bit before they caved...

I don't think we know that for sure.
I'd say it's more likely that is untrue. Why would LA waste time and money trying to void the contract of a soon-to-be UFA? In regard to Voynov, I also think the Kings hope he can play again. He was a very good player for them. In the mean time, they'll avoid the cap penalty anyway.

I guess call me an optimist that this isn't just about circumventing the cap and is a convenient situation. That Lombardi and the Kings have more class than that, and that this is a serious situation that is outside the bounds of the regular 'millionaire with bad habits off ice' of a unwanted hockey player.
But I get what you're saying. They were complying with League policy on Slava's 'cause he is a good player and important to the franchise, where as Richards was on the way out.
Timing is pretty convenient. Just hoping that the league/team will be vindicated once we find out what exactly Richards did.
(woah. I sound like a Kings fan....or worse, as naive as a Coilers fan)

If it's not big enough to lead to an arrest or criminal charges I simply don't see how it's going to get the Kings out of his contract. I believe this is simply a last gasp effort by the Kings to circumvent the salary cap. It's not like the other 29 teams are happy about this so I'm sure they will want to know exactly what it was that enabled a team to get out of a bad contract for their own dealings if the Kings can actually get away with it. That said if Richards isn't charged for any criminal activity I simply don't see how they get away with voiding his deal.

So there are leaks about trades and contract negotiations but nothing coming out as bad as beating your partner.
I call BS on this.
The kings are trying too get away with this, so they can get cap space because no one wants their crap.

Lombardi was discussing possible trade scenarios with Calgary and Edmonton, so he got up to personally notify GMs Brad Treliving and Peter Chiarelli. From what I understand, no transaction was close, but this ended any chance of a move.

I'm not sure what trouble you can get in at the border that isn't a felony, but serious enough to void your contract.
Prescription drugs?

I don't think you can void a contract for drugs or PED's without being placed in the NHL treatment program first.

If the Kings are pulling shenanigans here, they better lose multiple 1st round picks and get fined 8 digits.

I would be surprised if they would be punished. One would think they have a reason, and if it's not good enough and gets overturned how do you punish them?
"Sorry your read of the contract wasn't quite right, so we take picks and fine you"
I don't know if that will happen.

Yeah, that's what's so confusing about all this is the few details that emerged REALLY seem to narrow down what it could be.
It was almost easier to speculate before when we figured it was likely fitness related, because there's actually wording in a player's contract that covers it.
Now it's like okay, so there was an incident at a border crossing, but no arrest, but yet big enough to terminate an NHL contract in an almost unprecedented move.
I'm truly at a loss, and hope more info comes out soon.

Just spitballing here, but how much power do customs officers have as far as "banning" some one from entering a country? Is it possible to get a 5 year ban at the border without charges being laid?
I can only assume an NHL player being denied entry into the US and/or Canada could certainly be an impasse when it comes to employment with the NHL.

Border security has taught me that you can get a 1 year ban from canada haha. Unsure about the US since Richards is a Canadian citizen (presumably).

I'm sure someone else has said this but I have a hard time believing the league would okay this without going over it with a very fine toothed comb once by each lawyer they have making sure this was legit.
Whatever it is, it broke some sort of code of conduct and the league didn't blink.
