We just had Service Experts (via Costco) out to do a quote.

For one A/C unit for the upper floor (Lennox XC14, 2 ton, 16.2 Seer), he quoted about $5k plus tax.

Based on what I am reading in this thread, that seems high.

Any advice?

Try some other places (see the 3 I recommended earlier). 2 ton should be no more than $3.5k for a 13-15 seer unit. going much higher isn't really needed in Calgary.

I just had the XC-14 2.5 ton installed yesterday through Arpi's (Costco). Came to 4110 plus tax and got a $650 Costco cash card back.

Thanks, guys. I figured that had to be too high.

Ducay, I'll give Just In Time a call...I believe they did our furnace originally anyways.

Thanks!

I just had Home Depot (Friesens) quote me on my place (2300sqft 2 story) I was shocked when they quoted me on a 4 ton 13 seer American Standard unit for $6900.

Needless to say I'm looking for more quotes so any suggestions would be great. And with the wife on maternity leave somewhere where I can do some of of financing would be swell but not a deal breaker.

I'd read the thread. Lots of good suggestions in here already.

Now is the money making time for A/C guys - long heat spell means everyone will be busy and charging full price. A 4 ton 13seer unit shouldn't be more than $4k installed assuming a standard install.

Gundo- give SubZero a call. http://www.subzerotechnical.com/

You are only about 100 square feet bigger than me. I did get a discount as a friend works for them, but without the discount it should be just over $4K for a 4 tonne 16 seer.

We just had a couple of quotes done to cool our upstairs in our home, about 1550 SqFt.

One quote was from Arpis through Costco. They quoted a Lennox XC13-030, 30,000BTU, 2.5Ton, 14 Seer unit for $4015 then you get $550 back from Costco

Other quote was from a guy from Berc Mechanical. He quoted a HEIL H4A3 unit 36,000BTU, 3.0Ton, 13 Seer Unit for $3727.50.

The Arpis sales person told us SEER doesnt hold much weight in Alberta as you will never run your unit enough to truly see the savings impact. We just dont get hot enough all year round for the to really matter.

In the end we have decide to go with the Berc Mechanical quote as it seems like a bigger unit for better bang for our buck.

Probably true, but higher SEER means you feel less guilty running the A/C all day on weekends like this

From what I know, bigger doesn't mean better. (That's what she said?)

However, I have had quotes for my 2500 sqft home that range from a 2.5t to a 4t machine. WTF

Five years ago I bought the Lennox Elite XC-17 (http://www.lennox.com/products/air-conditioners/XC17/) from Apri's. It cost $5001 for a 2,300 sqft house with large west facing windows. It's definitely overkill for the house but large, quiet, and very energy efficient. I'm in my den right now and it's below my window but all you really hear is a low-grade hum. I'd say in a typical Calgary summer I really don't notice any difference in my power bill but it might go up $25-30 per month - definitely not enough to consider turning it off. I'd highly recommend this to anyone and Arpi's was excellent.

CAC is the best. Used my thermostats app to cool down the house as I was heading home this evening. Sleeping in 21 degrees while most of the city tosses and turns. First world FTW.

Trick for those without AC- go to your nearest liquor store and browse their beer selection for a half hour.

Involves going outside first.

Do you have a 2 story house? I've been told previously (Sears/etc.) that two stories means two units. Been looking at Lennox due to CostCo and what not. Was your unit including install? Thanks

If you have a two story house with two furnaces, then you would need two A/C units if you wanted to provide cooling to both floors. However I have heard of some people just using A/C on the top floor. It gives you a cool place to sleep, and offers some trickle down cooling to the main floor.
