Didn't move too much from last year. Some of those cap-strapped teams were hoping for a bigger increase I'm sure.

Yes. It's the second smallest increase in the cap era.

Oil prices probably have a lot to do with this.

Next CBA they need to go with a larger range imho. That cap floor is becoming as big an issue as the limit for rebuilding teams, that's an average of almost 2.5 million bucks a roster player at the minimum range.

So we have somewhere in the 21 million range in cap space if I'm doing the math correctly? I think we're up to ~$50 mil with Backlund's contract?

Do you mean the cap floor needs to be lower, which the NHLPA will never agree to, or higher, which is the problem for the rebuilding teams???

No idea the Flyers were so strapped. They should be talking to the Coyotes this weekend!

The Hawks on the other hand, have 8 mil of space with only 13 players signed. With Saad due for a payday i'm sure Stan Bowman just became a little more stressed.

Yah good luck selling the NHLPA on making less money.

I agree the range could be greater. Maybe leave the floor as is for while increasing only the ceiling for the next two or 3 increases.

I think the idea is to increase the range. So the cap floor would be lower, but the ceiling would be higher.
So in this case, for example, the ceiling would be 74.9 and the floor would be 49.3 if you widened the range by 3.5 million on either side.

I had no idea Stamkos is going to be a UFA after this coming season and Hedman will be a UFA in two seasons.

As far as I know these things are usually collectively bargained for the guys who make the lowest. With league average salary being what? 3 million? The majority of guys makes probably around that or less.
The lower paid guys have less endorsement opportunities and what not so it is more imperative they make more salary.
At least that's my view of the situation.

Only in the sense that weaker oil prices lead to a weaker Cdn dollar. But otherwise, no - they are a function of hockey-related revenues.

Sorry, yes this is what I meant. Weak CAD which is largely the result of low oil prices.
