Default Danish Election

Really this thread is only for true political junkies, or those with an interest in Scandinavian/European politics, but this is actually a fairly big election for Europe and Denmark, and it's an absolute nailbiter. Denmark's parliament has been run by coalitions since basically forever and this year you have the incumbent coalition run by the centre-left incumbent Social Democrats going up against the "blue bloc," which consists, notably, of the centre-right Venstre party and the right-wing Danish People's Party. The interesting thing about the centre-right coalition is that the DPP is actually in favour of expanding Denmark's social programs but they've gained popularity with the far-right in Denmark for their hardline stance against immigration.

The ramifications for the election could be huge because the centre-right coalition has agreed to support the UK in requesting various changes to the EU.

Anyways, if you want to follow along, there's a live blog here:

WOW!

Quote:
With 90% of the votes counted, it appears that the right-wing Danish People’s Party are overtaking the centre-right Liberal Party as Denmark’s second largest, with over 21% of the vote:
So that centre-right coalition I was talking about is now going to be led by the far-right party.

The anti-immigration wave is really growing over the last decade in Europe. It seems to be growing at a populace level, not a policy level, in Sweden lately as well. Then you have all the PEGIDA stuff too.

If we're honest, their stance against "immigration" is a stance against muslim immigrants. I'm sure I could move to Denmark and no one would really mind.

^^They're also having issues with EU citizens from poorer EU countries or social services moving and living in the countries with better services and not attempting to learn the language or assimilate in any way.

Not just Roma. Denmark has seen a pretty big influx from a lot of different countries over the last two decades. The Polish are probably the most notable.

Copenhagen and the surrounding area went completely red (centre-left). Not too surprising as that's the most educated part of the country. This is not going to help the perception held by the Swedes and Norwegians that Danes are the backwater hicks of Scandinavia.

Spoiler!

Its very odd, in Iceland we've had a huge jump in the polls for the Pirate party. Its a party led by one of the wikileaks people Birgitte, and is attracting youths in droves, it as it stands has 35% of the popular vote 2yrs out from the national elections.

http://icelandreview.com/news/2015/0...argest-iceland

The neat thing is it refused to take a label of right or left party, and has attracted significant numbers of people from all the other parties, including right wing and left wing.

Its succeeding on one key front, accountability and transparency in government. They are slaughtering people in discussions on social media and this next election if the polls are even remotely close to these numbers would mean a shocking sea change in Iceland.

Its an exciting time in Iceland, to be a pirate party member

Probably, but it is not like everything is hunky-dory there either. For example in Malmo, something like 45% of the population are now foreigners (mostly from the ME). There is a lot of tension there these days due to it. I believe the city also has Sweden's highest unemployment rate of their major cities and towns, which doesn't help.
