That's weird. Every time I have been on a plane, they never give me a full can and always insist on pouring it into a little cup. They won't even give up the opened can unless I ask for it. I always just figured they were being cheap and wanted to use the rest of the contents for the next person though. It never occurred to me that someone could use it as a weapon. That would take some pretty awesome ninja skills I think.
I just got home from a trip to Europe and on all the flights I took (including the one home two days ago), none of my drinks were opened prior to being handed to me. Maybe this is a North American thing?

haha yeah no kidding. I laughed so hard when they started allowing them again.
Although when I was working at airport security in uni I found quite a few bags full of sex toys. Only 1 with an attractive women carrying it . A surprising amount of business men in suits carrying them in their pockets

You can buy cans of soda/energy drinks from the shops at the airport terminal (after security) can't you?
Certainly. But that doesn't mean that you can take all these things on the plane with you.
I fly quite often through Schiphol in Amsterdam. They have a Starbucks in the security area. It's not that I am a Starbucks fiend, but there are only six in Norge, and the closest one to me is 280 kms away. Anyhow, it's been two or three times now when I have grabbed a coffee while transferring flights that I have been stopped at the gate and told to leave my coffee behind before boarding the plane.

So basically it was pure discrimination, and an attempt to cover it up by citing a phony security concern.
There is no misunderstanding United, discrimination by your employee is what it is.
And the guy who yelled at her? What a complete POS. Can't believe other passengers just sat by and let some scumbag unleash his bigoted BS on this woman.
'Murica. That country is flushing down the toilet, and its not "the Moslems" fault.

Yeah but what is stop you from buying a can of coke/red bull/etc at the news stand near the gate, putting it in your carry-on and then pulling it out on the plane.
Complete joke to say that it is a security concern to have an unopened drink when anyone can easily bring one onto the plane.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but you just slandered an entire nation as well... so yeah.
Really? Because I can't recall a flight attendant ever not doing so.
It's ask what a person wants:
If soda: pop open the can, poor it into a small cup overloaded with ice, and then offer if you want the rest of the can.
If beer: either pour into a cup or open and provide the beer.
Though I must say I've never asked for an unopened one so I don't know if I would be given one or not.
I fly WestJet every now and then. When the beverage cart comes around I always ask for a can of Coke. I don't like drinking pop with ice, and airplane ice is disgusting. Every single time I've asked for it they give me an opened can and a napkin. They usually ask if I want a plastic cup, which I decline. Then they offer me some kind of snack (cookies, crackers, etc.).

Has this really happened? I know when the "no liquids" rule came out people were guzzling their drinks before boarding, thinking they couldn't bring it on the plane. Any liquid that's past security can be brought on. If you bring a 5L empty water bottle, you can fill that up and bring it on a plane. You can buy every beverage in Hudsons and if it fits in your carry on, you're good to go. Want a Starbucks cappuccino before takeoff? Order yourself a Venti and bring that sum' bitch onto the plane.

Yeah, it's happened to me a couple of times, but only in Amsterdam. I don't know if my god given frequent flyer rights are being violated, and am honestly not so bothered to press the issue.

Schiphol has different security than a lot (most?) NA airports - you don't clear any security until the actual gates in some areas. In Hong Kong, we experienced a second liquids screening at the gate for our flight to Seattle in February - I believe all liquids over the 100ml rule were being confiscated (not sure about duty free items, however, I would think they were exempt).

K I'm totally on board with shaming the POS that yelled that and I'm disappointed no one else defended her (that we know of at least). The whole thing about the flight attendant is getting blown out of proportion though.
Basically there are two explanations...
Option 1:
She was serving drinks and saw this Muslim women, immediately disgusted by the fact that she had to serve a Muslim for the first time (which I assume by the fact that there is no mention of her being new, and no prior incidents reported) she reluctantly walked over and asked her what she wanted to drink and to her disgust, this non-american requests an unopened can. A request she cleverly and with malice of forethought rejected to spite the Muslim women. She then moved on to the next few passengers one of whom, a true red white and blue christian looking white man, requested a beer. The flight attendant sees this as one more opportunity to spite the Muslim lady and gives the man his beer unopened. Then when that Muslim lady had the audacity to question this act, the attendant accused her of being a jihadist and rolled on. #### YEAH AMERICA.
Option 2:
The flight attendant made a mistake. Maybe she thought she had to open cans of pop and didn't have to open bottles of beer or maybe she just forgot to open the mans beer. When questioned she didn't know what to say and went with a pretty poor choice of excuse and opened that mans beer after to avoid any more issues. It probably would have ended there and this would have been a non-story until that moronic bigot decided to yell that hateful crap.
I think I know which option I think is more likely. Lets not crucify this flight attendant and get her fired cause she made a mistake and chose a poor excuse. None of what she said or did can be interpreted as hateful and like I said, this would probably not have turned into anything if it wasn't for the stupid, hateful man that yelled the Muslim thing.

If I wanted something to use as a weapon, I'd consider a stroll through duty free. Not ask for an unopened/opened can of pop. Wine bottle > Can any day.
But hey, I guess a presurized can is great for laundry terrorism if you want to shake it up and point it at people I guess. If I wanted to see who could win a bludgeoning contest with items found on a plane, I'd put money on the guy with the rolled up magazine, not the pop can guy.

This story just seems sorta weird.
I always found that interesting. You can't have a small knife, and for good reason, but you can bring on a full 40 of booze? Smash that over someone's head and then use the broken bottle as a weapon. I'm surprised it hasn't been used to hijack a plane yet.
