When you show up at my house, take your shoes and hat off at the door.

No definitely funerals but all were in smaller towns. That might be the key factor.

You would hate Iceland, most people wear shoes inside, well at parties at least and dinner parties. We also don't use carpets so that helps.

I do not like to hold the elevator for people. I know we are supposed to be polite and do it, but no, it's not for me. I'm not the elevator man. I don't work in it. I don't have to run it for you. I don't want to have to stand here like a chump with my hand on the button while you casually walk to the elevator. And then you are likely going to ask me to press a floor button for you, because heaven forbid, you do something yourself. And I'll do it. I've already held the elevator for you, I might as well also press the button you need. Perhaps I will also lay my coat down across the floor when you get off.

Sometimes, I just like to have a few minutes to just take a breath on my own before I have to get into work mode. Plus, I hate that sometimes you get the stupid small talk or awkward eye contact. Holding it for someone is also a waste of my time.

Elbows on table is another. I am weirdly aware of it though. I will put them on the table and then I can hear my mom's voice in my head saying, get your elbows off the table. But I ignore her as best I can, because I still like to rebel against my parents even though I'm in my 30s.

Yah unless I am leaving my floor with someone and I am waiting for them I don't hold the elevator either.

You have from the time I push my floor button to when the doors close to get on. If you can't get your arm in the door you will be waiting for another elevator.

I pretend to be reaching for the door opening buttons, but really I'm pushing the placebo door close buttons. then I give a sheepish look as the doors close like "sorry dude, I tried my best."

haha jk. But I'm cool with hats indoors. I usually only wear ball caps on the weekend if i get up to go somewhere and don't have a chance to get ready. Like someone said once (on hear, i think) I don't pay 60 bucks for a haircut to cover it up every chance I get.

I hide in the elevator so I can't see people and they can't see me so I have no obligation

The worst is someone getting to the button and it reopens your elevator door and you didn't try to hold it for them and they know it. That's ackward.

I don't get the hat thing?

The only reason I'd support a "No hat" policy is a formal situation where a hat just isn't appropriate. Otherwise, what difference does it make?

Shoes make total sense. Hat is just being a dick.

Well only some of the time would I hate it, I'd have no problem wearing my shoes inside someone elses house. But I would always take my hat off.

I like this. I tend to walk pretty fast, faster than average, and so I like to live by this creed. I cannot stand when people are walking slow in big groups all over the sidewalk. Sometimes people are completely oblivious and almost zig zag over the sidewalk making passing them a lot harder.

See, I think you wearing your hat inside makes you the dick.
Hats are practical items to wear outside, to keep the sun or the rain off your head. What purpose do they serve indoors?

Whats the point of wearing a watch if you have a cellphone?

Me wearing a hat has zero effect on you.

I'll hold an elevator door if I notice someone with mobility difficulties (ie: Elderly, pregnancy, crutches) but often skip and wait elevators if a wheel chair is present (gets cramped quickly, loading and unloading on occasion take longer than necessary). When I enter, if I'm not holding the elevator for aforementioned people, I just put in the floor and stand away from the buttons. No one can blame me for not pushing buttons because I wasn't close enough to buttons (Why do you want to stand in front of them anyways? Hands and arms reach around you to poke the wall in front of you).

Elbows is a funny one. I do on occasion, but not in front of parents, relatives and inlaws. I also do a weird one where I "correct" the placement of cups on a table so the likelihood of it being knocked over is lower. I also hold an arm across my stomach to keep clothes from falling into my food even when my clothes aren't baggy enough to hit my food, or, my plate is empty. This is doubly awkward if I'm clutching the napkin on my lap to keep it falling on the floor.

Do you guys rage when people don't stand idle on right side and use left side as "passing lane" on escalators too? They do this just fine in Asia. Here, people stand all over the place on escalators.

For me, I don't mind zig zag'rs. I walk fast too. The ones I have issues passing are the ones who swing their arms. Hard to pass when I fear being bocked in the nuts on a passing attempt on a crowded street.

Or is there a manner faux pas for walking on escalators in North America?

I don't go overly out of my way to let a lady on/off the elevator before me. Elevator onboarding/offboarding is about pure efficiency. If we're standing side by side or at the back of a group where I can let her go first then of course, but if it creates dead time then no I'm going first.

My old boss would always go way out of his way. Like the elevators jammed and he'd back up into people to make room for a lady to get off at the same floor before him. I mean, I respect him for it since clearly he was raised right, but man was it annoying sometimes.

I always walk on escalators and my girlfriend was basically forced to do it to keep up . There isn't a faux pas as the vast majority stand, but most people just assume that everyone stands so they either block a bit of the left lane or two people stand side by side. Sometimes I just walk up and they notice and move, other times ill just stand as its not a huge deal. In some cases, I will say excuse me and will get the rudest look from the person like "excuse me! I'm enjoying my break in walking because shopping malls are too big!"

Most people are ok with walkers, they just don't expect it most of the time. I personally think that escalators should be phased out with more elevators for those who cannot walk stairs. Everyone else can afford to walk a little more.

I take great pleasure in pointedly saying "excuse me, can I get by please" to people lollygagging on the left side of an escalator.

For me its the windmilling smokers. Like I really want to risk being hit with a lit cigarette because someone has to exclaim every word with their hands!

Like totally!!

That lack of any social norms around walking really burns me. Waddlers, random stoppers, people who seem compelled to walk four abreast. Walking is a mode of transportation like any other. Keep your head up, be aware of what's going on around you, and make allowances to keep the flow going.
