A 2nd was such a steal for this kid.

Just like Berra.

I will start with this: I was on the Sven bandwagon, his first 5 games were electrifying. I remember the game against PHX I was in the stands and Brent started him with Nemiez and I said he is gonna score on this shift. He did.

He had an aura about him in that stretch. But over time it dissipated and I was still choked we traded him but was ready to let him go...

That doesn't mean we need to treat everything mentioned about the kid as revolt worthy. Getting hat trick is descent enough for an update. I'm still sore about it all (my handle pic still has Sven in it) but doesn't mean we need to be so negative about anything Sven related..

I get it, it's been beaten to death like a dead horse but he was still one of our most promising prospects..even if now he is less so and we all kinda want him to fail I don't think we should blindly hate all Sven talk.

He is part of our history. There are plenty of painful ones we can bring up worse than Svens failures in a Flames uni..

Personally I'm going to wait who gets the better player, Going by the odds I would say right now Sven is better than the 53rd pick..we'll see.

Not thrilled this thread got bumped, but since it is and off season discussion is slow:

Who's got greater NHL promise. Sven or Jankowski?

Sven is 2 years older, 2 years closer to realizing his potential - or not.
Sven is undeniably close. With his slow development curve will Janko be even close to NHL in 2 years?

My vote is Janko for better promise, although I think 3-4 years before he breaks in

I expect Sven will end up playing top-minutes for an NHL team at some point.

I expect Jankowski will end up being like a lesser Joe Colborne.

Sorry, but Sven does not have top line ability.

I have nothing against Sven having some success elsewhere. The truth of it is, he was passed by more promising prospects so he didn't have a future here.

realistically it won't be known for 3-5 years, because even if Sven somehow ends up scoring 20-30 goals in the next year or two

that 2nd round pick is years away

Not if Sven doesn't make Vancouver's roster out of the gate and is waived or traded instead of being waived...

Also, in a way it's a good thing that we got the second round pick for Baertschi. Assuming that that player won't be ready for 3 years, that will fit when the Flames are needing cheap players. Assuming all goes well in the next couple years in regard to the development of the players still in the system, they will have to deal players much in the same way that Chicago did back in 2011 after winning the cup. The new player could end up being a quality replacement for whomever will be dealt.

Doubtful a new GM would waive a player he just paid a 2nd for. Sven will get every opportunity and some to play in the top 9 next year, he would have to poop on the coaches lap not too.

Sure, Sven will get every opportunity to play top 9 minutes for he nucks....just like he did with the Flames. Sven didn't earn a spot on the Flames and I think the GM won't just give sven a spot if someone else plays better and earns it. It would be bad asset management for the nucks to put sven on waivers but it would be bad team management to give him a spot he hasn't earned. Sven didn't show that he was good enough to be a roster player on the Flames and in his limited time with the nucks, I'd say he isn't good enough to be a roster player there. If they haven no prospects to push him out or they don't sign someone better, he'll be there but to just give him a spot would be worse than giving him away IMO.

He doesn't, but he does have 'good player on a bad team' ability.

A very, very, very poor man's Phil Kessel, if you like.

Sven will be an NHLer next season, while Jankowski's future is still very much up in the air. Odds are Sven has the better career.
I am pulling for Janko, but we have to look at this without Flames blinders on.

What does Janko have to do with anything? Sven is being compared to the second he got traded for.

Sure, sven may be an NHLer next year but I'm willing to bet it's for nowhere close to a full season. He just hasn't shown he's good enough or that he has the work ethic to improve his game. I'm guessing he'll end up back in Europe within 2 years.

I don't think so at all. Sven is kind of at a cross roads seeing he's going to have to show he can play or be a regular healthy scratch and eventually bounce around the league on waivers. Jankowski is a few years away from even having the opportunity to make the Flames roster. Odds are split 50/50 as Sven as of today has been a bigger disappointment as he couldn't crack an NHL lineup over the last two years.

If he is, it is only because the Canucks don't want to look like they gave up a 2nd round pick for nothing. Baertschi's game just doesn't translate to the NHL. He's small and plays smaller. He doesn't have a great shot and he refuses to go to the areas where he can score. He's a decent skater, but doesn't have that top end speed to make a difference. He's going to have to ride shot gun on a line that will allow him to play his game along the half wall because he's completely ineffective in every other aspect of the game. I'll go way out on the ledge and say "The Swiss Miss" will be out of the NHL by Christmas. The Canucks will give him every opportunity to be successful but he will not hit expectations and be waived before the year is out. No one will pick him up and Baertschi's fragile ego will be done.

Jankowski is twice the hockey player Baertschi is. Jankowski plays in parts of the ice Sven doesn't even know exist. Jankowski will carve out a position in the NHL because he will play in what ever role he asked to play. Mark can play on several lines and be successful. Baertschi can play in only one role, and he isn't even very good at it. I think you need to spend some time watching these two players to get a true appreciation of what they are. We should be excited about Jankowski because of the character and positional flexibility he brings to the table. These are the exact reasons why Baertschi was traded to one of our chief rivals. That is what you would see if you took your own blinders off.

I don't mind these bumps, off season and all. It also reminds me of how truly awful Sven was in the NHL over the past two seasons. I wish him the best, he's never going to be a game changer, even at his best he can't save the sinking canucks so I hope he steps up and makes a nice career for himself. I don't see that happening as he is just to soft and slow for the NHL and I don't see that changing.

Sven wasn't the same player after he got his bell rung a couple times.

Used to go to the tough areas, and now is more strictly on the perimeter.

I kind of hope he figures it out...after he gets waived by the Canucks and picked up by a team like Florida though.
