Gio is the type of player you back the Brinks truck up for.

I'm ok with that as well, but any year after 35 needs a significant drop in salary.

I honestly think too often, players in this situation will sign a long term deal with some years of less $$ at the back end to bring the cap down and adjust for their age. But I think a guy like Selanne probably made himself an extra $10 mil or so by purely signing 1 year deals for a few straight years and earning more than those years would have paid him if he had signed a front-loaded contract.

Pretty important negotiation here. This sets the tone for all the future negotiations with our young players and our new management group. I hope the negotiations are quick and painless, with a little hometown discount involved to promote a healthy cap situation.

5 years @ 6.8 per.

He'll turn 32 at the start of next season, and his next contract won't kick in until the fall of 2016.

I could see him signing a maximum 5 year deal, and even then, the final year may be just there to lower the overall cap hit.

Great guy, great captain and even better player... but 31 years old, three consecutive (non-lockout) seasons of missing 20 games, and only two consecutive seasons playing at a Norris-calibre level.

Option One
Four years @ five million per year, with an annual bonus of one million for 70 games played

Option Two
Two years @ six million per year, with an annual bonus of one million for 70 games played

Edit: On second thought, I wouldn't offer the two year deal. I'd want him signed for the next four years minimum. We just need him on the ice for more than 3/4 of a season.

He can't sign a contract with any performance bonuses in it.

7 mill x 5 he gets injured quite a bit. Re-assess again in 5 years.

Front loaded contract. Contract drops with age. For reference sake, Stephane Robideaux's contract this year as a 38 year old was for $3,000,000
Dan Boyle $4,500,000 at age 37
Bryce Salvador $3,250,000 at 38
Gonchar $5,000,000 at 40

6 years:
$7,000,000 (2016/17 Age 33)
$6,000,000 (2017/18 Age 34)
$6,000,000 (2018/19 Age 35)\
$4,000,000 (2019/20 Age 36)
$4,000,000 (2020/21 Age 37)
$4,000,000 (2021/22 Age 38)
$3,750,000 (2022/23 Age 39)

7 years average cap hit $4.96 million

I think he gets 5 or 6 years max.

The dollars will likely range from 6 to 8 million per, which I'm OK with.

Interesting that Treliving did talk about the contract like it would take him to retirement. I think he'll get a 5 year deal $42.5M as well, then see how things go at 36.

Do people really think Gio will have a higher cap hit than Weber and Doughty? He isn't as young and dominant as these perennial Norris candidates.

No, that's the age at which players can receive performance bonuses.

The only players who can sign a contract with performance bonuses are entry-level players and players over 35 who are signing a one-year contract.

The only other exception are NHL veterans who were on the IR for more than 100 days in the final year of their previous contract, and again, they can only get performance bonuses if they sign a one-year deal.

Doughty signed his 8 year contract when he was 22 and Weber was offer-sheeted to a 14 year contract before the new CBA kicked in. Very different situations and in no way comparable to the upcoming Gio contract.
