No, I'm not particularly offended, I'm pointing out that it is sexist and if people do care about it they have a perfect right to be because it's identical to the Sedin Sisters, Cindy Crosby, Chrissy Pronger etc etc etc classic sports BS of "Man Strong, Woman Weak" that's existed for a long time and we could use a lot less of.

PS - you've already embarrassed yourself enough in this thread and now, despite the overall tone of your posts, you've managed to appoint yourself to speak on behalf of "most women"? Dude, you need to stop.

I just don't understand why people won't stop doing something that literally doesn't change their life at all but will definitely change the life of others. Just stop demeaning women and doing stupid things like chanting for them to show their breasts. This will not affect you in the slightest, but will have an impact on improving the lives of women.

And the poster Polak is one of the worst posters on this site, just garbage comes out of his keyboard, it's embarrassing for this site.

How about all female and male fans just stop being so butthurt and making issues out of things that don't even need to be issues in the first place?

the sisters, katy perry stuff. who even cares that much? it is sort of an insult in a sense because its a physical sport and it's well known that women don't possess the testosterone that men do, so in a way you're calling them weak. but so long as female fans get that it's not an insult to all women kind, that it's merely made to make fun of the player/s at hand, and can laugh along too, then its not even an issue.

those sorts of nick names and insults have been around for a long time...so just now we're suddenly deciding its an issue? lol.

as for the red mile, I don't know why they're pushing all this publicity on "safe red mile" all of a sudden. I walked down there after last game and it felt like a pretty safe and fun atmosphere to me. Thats why the CPS will have a presence there. like really..making mountains out of molehills...

I thought "Katy Perry" was the fans telling Cory that he was cute but not very talented.

I'll see myself out.

I find your views on gender politics and male hegemony to be sophisticated and nuanced.

Agreed 100%.

I was down there briefly on Tuesday night and there was zero boobs, harassment or chants for women to take their tops off.

Sure there might have been 1 drunk idiot but everyone keeps talking about these mysterious mass chants which took place.... it didn't happen. The media and the silly ##### cat doll group have blown this WAY out of proportion.

I'm asking you to go ask more women than your sociology prof.

You're doing the exact same thing I am, just on the other side of the issue .

I think if most wonen I might find wandering around thought about it for a moment they would be able to identify the obvious sexism. But that doesn't matter because these things aren't decided by a show of hamds. That approach is facile.

You've pretty consistently demonstrated an unparalleled inability to be able to discern between outrage and identification. It's one of the many things that makes your posts come off as though they were written by an eight-grade social studies student.

I never accused him of being outraged. It's more like he's telling women they should be offended because it fits the definition of sexist.

At least that's how I take someone asking the league to denounce something...

This Katy Perry chant is becoming the replacement for the Advanced stats crowd in terms of annoyance.

You made the claim that people are getting offended. That's what I meant. Identifying sexist language isn't the same as being offended by it.

You can get pure, unadulterated hockey fun simply by not visiting the specific threads that aren't that.
But what makes this site great is the combination of casual sports talk, but also serious matters where sports is part of the conversation.
While I stand by my position that this thread ceased really being about hockey a good while back, I agree with what you have posted here, particularly the part in bold.

Fair enough.

I took him saying the league should denounce it as it being offensive. Otherwise, why make a stink about it at all?

Just brings more negative attention to the league we love.

Honest question: what's the point of identifying sexist language if the majority are not offended by it?

Hate to be that guy jumping on, but I couldn't agree more with this. I have polak on ignore and I still can't ignore him because he clogs up every thread by saying something incredibly stupid and defending it to the death, effectively ruining that thread for everyone (or at least, I assume so).

Maybe take a break from this site for a while.

It has nothing to do with anyone being "offended". We're not talking about individual reactions. We're talking about the cultural or societal consequences of this type of behaviour.

Chants meant to demean by feminizing (or homosexualizing) players and celebrating victory by chanting for female fans to show their breasts are clear examples, I think, of behaviour that reinforces the traditional, hyper-masculine discourse which has dominated western society for thousands of years.

EDIT: Just to add: many people have concerns about the negative consequences of this sort of hyper-masculine discourse for our society. That is why these things get discussed.

There are people who matter that aren't part of the majority.
