Agree with Zarley 100%. I like his game call and for the most part he is neutral.
One of the best play by play guys in the business.
Hell Bob Cole showed bias during his calls of certain Eastern based teams yet people seem to love him.

Can definitely hear a bias, and the way he rattles off the subtle changes to the Canucks lines and other small details, shows that he's very aware of the Canucks a lot more than the Flames (or any othjer team), but tonight wasn't that bad.
One call was the time that Bennett (I think) in the third made a great play and Hughson said "that looked very close to a penalty" (meaning, that should've been called).
That said, Game 1 and 2 watched at a pub with, and was there two nights ago.
I am sure he'll ramp it up for the last hurrah in Vancouver.

Canucks buddy or not, he bugs me, honestly I can't stand him. His voice, his delivery, all the cliches, the hokey gosh gollyisms, are very annoying to me. Personal taste.
Flames SN crew this year was excellent, on the other hand.

I think the subtle changes are that he is more familiar with Vancouver than with Calgary. If you put Hrudy and Ball in I suspect you would get the same thing. The panel (including Hrudy) is definately Calgary centric.
All in all it's very watchable and a quality call. The only guy I would like more is Cuthbert.

agree there. He's had some cringe worthy lines this series.

For the life of me, i don't understand why Chris Cuthbert is not the #1 play-by-play broadcaster in hockey. He is miles ahead of Hughson.

Bob Cole was somewhat of a Maple Leafs homer, but he was the best in the business for years. I miss Don Whittman, my personal favorite play-by-play commentator. I never really care for Hughson for some reason.

Thought Jim was better last night. I'm sure he tries his best no to be partisan and it's a lot easier when the Canucks are losing. It's nice listening to Gord Miller do games for NBC. I kind of miss his call.

Agreed. I like hearing Gord Miller call games. Basically impossible to tell who his favorite team is, or if he even has one.
Hughson wasnt as bad last night, but Simpson had some cringeworthy lines. They both got caught up in talking about how and what Van needed to do to get back in the game, and very little about what Calgary was doing right to negate anything Van tried. A little less talk about how much and when the twins are on the ice would go a long way to a more balanced game call.

Probably because he decided to stay on the sinking ship that is TSN. Too bad, because I agree, Cuthbert is top two for me. My personal favorite is Mike Emrick. His call of the Martinez Cup winning goal last year was brilliant, especially compared to Hughson's.

lol apparently to Nucks fans on CDC, Hughson is biased towards Calgary because he gives Johnny Gaudreau two names! You can't make this stuff up hahah
although when i think about it...he usually does say Johnny Gaudreau instead of just Gaudreau

That's just Hughson's style. He rarely calls anybody by just their last name. I was trying to listen for that during the third period last night because of somebody's comment about him always saying "Luca Sbisa" instead of just Sbisa and pretty much his entire call is the full names of players. It's just easy not to notice it until somebody points it out about a specific player and then it can drive you crazy - see "Masonraymond" as an example.

It's strange. For the US broadcasts we got Cuthbert/Hedican in Games 1 and 4. Hughson and Simpson for 2 and 3. I like Hughson when he's not calling a Canucks game. I think it has more to do with my disdain for the Canucks than it does anything Hughson does. The Daniel/Henrik thing gets old, but honestly every guy does it and what is the alternative? Sedin, Sedin, Sedin, Sedin? I really enjoy Simpson's colour.
All of that aside, not everyone can be Ralph Strangess and Daryl Reaugh. It doesn't get much better than that pair.

Flipped over to Sportsnet for a bit and was weird to have Gord Miller calling a game there (they took the US feed for Hawks/Predators)

The Daniel/Henrik thing really bugged me the first game - it came across way too familiar. He's toned it down since and uses their full names more often than not. Also using Flames' full names more, so coming across more evenly

I actually think he's less of a homer than Cole is with Toronto. I haven't quite forgiven him when he called a Flames/Leafs game, and the Lefas jumped out to a 4 goal lead and he commented at the how the Leafs were beating the "highly touted" Calgary Flames. Of course, Calgary came back and won

It's funny, cause in the nucks forums, they are getting annoyed with what they perceive as Flames favoritism...
