I think it depends on the rib, but in the overwhelming majority of cases you are right.
however, as has been stated in the thread, people have played before with broken ribs. Hell, Hulk Hogan even body slammed Andre the Giant with broken ribs in 1993..... ... so herculean feats can be done!

Seems like something Bieksa would do.

Totally sounds like something that Bieksa would do.

I love that 3 posts in a row point to Kevin 'Cornelius' Bieksa.

Best of luck, but glad he's out of the lineup. He was between the Sedin's wasn't he? Who goes there now? Sven?

Burrows was on the wing, I'd imagine Vrbata replaces him now?

Burrows plays on the right side.
Sven plays on the left side.

Burrows is actually a LW who plays his off wing when with the Sedins.
... Although I may be basing that off of EA Sports.

Karma... If he would have gotten his one game suspension, he likely would have not been at the morning skate, ergo likely would not have been injured. Oh sweet Justice.

Friendly fire fells Burrows. Practice shot. Displaced rib. #Canucks
Displaced rib fracture means he will not be playing anytime soon, from what I understand. One hit could send that broken rib into his lung.

Didn't Hawerchuk play with broken ribs in 85. Wore a flak vest?

Don't like the guy but that is a ####ty way to get injured in the playoffs.
Work all year to get in the dance and then a teammate hits you with a slapshot and you end up with a broken rib.

Don't think they would risk it these days. You have a risk of a player dying on the ice if they get hit wrong. I don't think doctors would clear him to play. Just my opinion of course.

I think that's actually irony.
But then again it probably isn't.

This seems really bizarre. Players get hit with shots in the torso all the time. Maybe he wasn't wearing full equipment becuase it was a morning skate?

Yup, and he was immediately and blatantly targeted. It was hard to watch as a youngster.

With the amount that players block shots, and the velocity of the hard rubber disk flying at them, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.
