Just like Tim Ramholt.

Frankly, that's the risk of drafting Swiss players. They are from a first world country that has a really high paying professional league. Why ride the bus in the AHL in a foreign land burning hundreds of thousands each year if you don't have to?

Could you not say the exact same thing of Sweden, Finland, Russia etc?

Those Sven quotes made me think of Monahan, funny enough. Who has been working so hard on his defensive game, positioning, play away from the puck and face offs that Hartley had to remind him to pay attention to the offensive zone as well. He has the complete opposite attitude it seems (ie. I was drafted high and therefore shouldn't have to work on my complete game).

And just look at the success he's having.

Hartley is building a culture. Sven didn't seem willing to be a part of that. Good riddance I say. This is setting precedent for future rookies and draft picks who look at Monahan and think "oh that's what I need to do to succeed".

For what it's worth, I like checking this thread for the latest news on Sven. He was a top prospect that struggled and then was traded to a rival.

It's an interesting story, though mainly I hope he struggles just because he is a Canuck. If he is waived and then goes elsewhere and is great, I will be happy for him.

It's gonna happen to me sooner or later because I don't usually check the poster before I quote or thank. So I'm gonna say. "That was really smart" and quote myself.

I just realized that Sven Baertschi IS Trent Richardson (NFL)

Player is a high draft pick of a team with a lousy reputation with developing offensive players [Check]

Rookie season shows potential and builds hype in fan base [Check]
3 goals in 5 games for Sven, 950 yards 11 TD for Trent

However, player still has flaws
Trent can't get past 3.5 YPC, Sven struggled in the d zone

Traded to a conference rival for a high draft pick mid season, with a much better track record of developing offensive players[Check]
Trent to the Colts, Sven to Canucks

When the trade broke, everyone thought the team acquiring the player won the trade, and would make the player as good as he can be [Check]
http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...ight=baertschi
http://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments...ndy_for_colts/

Player has huge confidence after the trade and plays well [Check]
Trent scores a TD in his first game, Sven lights up the AHL

Same old flaws rear their ugly head with new team, doubters grow louder [Ongoing]
Trent 3.3 YPC, healthy scratched in playoffs then released
Sven, -1 in first game with flashes of upside but largely invisible with bad defensive plays.

Thoughts?

The NFL's version of Sven Baertschi, didn't you read the post?

Just kidding, but he is an NFL player who was hyped as the best running back in years when he was drafted, had a good rookie season, was traded when he wasn't improving at all, failed his way off that team and now is on the NFL's version of the Edmonton Oilers.

Yawn... A lot of time wasted discussing a player traded away. Don't see the Glencross thread here anywhere and he played with us for many years and wore an A.

Swiss running back in the NFL? No seriously he's this amazing reclamation project that's going to win the 2015 NFL rushing title wearing silver & black..............

Honestly, if this thread turns into a thread discussing football players it would be more useful.

Sven is gone. He wasn't as good as some thought and still isn't. The kid is putting up points but not in the NHL. Until he does something in the NHL he'll still be considered a bust due to the fact that he's already been in the NHL and hasn't really done anything. He's small, plays a small game, doesn't play a 200 ft. game and more importantly he's in a franchise that is a hated rival of the Flames.

It's funny how some posters can't let Sven go, whereas others have not only quit posting about him, they've quit posting period. Grief is an erratic emotion.

not sure why people expect this thread to not generate massive traffic.

He was the first step to, and face of the Calgary Flames rebuild when he got drafted. During his ELC, he's been arguably the most polarizing member of the flames since Dion Phaneuf. Then he gets traded to the flames 1st or 2nd biggest rival.

That's a recipe for range of different fan emotions & opinions. All things Baertchi will likely be a debated topic for a long while.

SB story is the reflection of Flames history of:

bad management
bad drafting
bad development
bad trading

all rolled into one. A bit of everything, Dion, Killer, Marty, Nemisch, etc.
Makes your stomach turn........

Not really. I'm uncertain how anyone could think Russia is a first world county at this point but Dave King's stories (reading King of Russia is a must) and the Lokomotiv plane crash pretty clearly show that even the promise of millions isn't always worth it.

Finland and Sweden offer 200 to 400k/ year, but average attendance is comparable to the AHL. Mostly this is due to population. Stockholm has a 900K people.

The Swiss league by contrast is the best attended league outside the NHL.

So really not a ton of incentive for Swiss players.

Sven will sit out tonight's game against the Kings. He'll be replaced on the Canucks' fourth line by the more physical Ronalds Kenins.

So, I guess Baertschi's audition with the Canucks didn't pan out quite as hoped.
