I think they should call him up to the Flames.
Team needs an offensive spark. No one other than the top line is doing anything offensively right now.
I'm not expecting Bennett to come in and light the NHL on fire, but I do think he can provide a spark that no one else has been able to provide.

The player who sits for Bennett (if he plays will be pissed). I'm sure Jooris was ticked off yesterday being sat. Anybody who sits for anyone is going to be ticked. If Wotherspoon plays next game over Potter or schlemko they'll be pissed.
And the rest of the players won't care. They just want to win.

Well Bollig, Colborne and Granlund have nothing to be pissed off about other than not making the most of their opportunity with Jooris and Byron out.
Once Jooris and Byron are ready, I suspect we see Granlund sent down with Bollig and Colborne in the press box (assuming Bennett is called up which I see no reason why he wouldnt be at this point)

They won't "blame Bennett", you are likely right, but they will blame the Flames for not sticking to their always earned never given mantra. These are competitive athletes, and I assure you it doesn't matter two licks to them what Bennett has accomplished at the OHL level, they aren't going to view his OHL stats are him earning a spot on this team at game 79, unless it really works out. All they will see is a guy who hasn't played a pro game and hasn't proven #### took a spot from someone with pro experience who has earned it all year long. Trust me, even the Raymond or the Shore's of the world aren't sitting here right now going, well that Bennett guy is better than me right now at hockey, hope they call him up and he takes my spot, cause that's what's good for the team. Everyone in that dressing room right now has proven something at the NHL level, and that's all that matters to them.
|
Thanks for assuring me. Of course none of the players care what he's done in junior.
But you seem to think they are fragile and might reject the team for bringing in a new player. That is ridiculous. New guys come in all the time.
It is the team's responsibility to continually ice the best team possible. The players understand this. You are making them sound like 14 year old girls.

You are seriously giving the current Flames players far too much credit in regards to how they are going to take a rookie with no experience coming in to play in the most exciting games of the year that they've worked so hard to make the most exciting games of the year. This is a results oriented business, and if the results come from putting Bennett in, no one will question it, if they don't, guys are going to wonder why the Flames gambled a roster spot on an unproven rookie when we had a bunch of healthy bodies available who were "good enough" to get a team that was picked to finish dead last in the league to a spot where they were in the playoffs before inserting the rookie.
|
Again, of course the players don't care about his pedigree.
But again, you seem to think they are psychologically fragile and will be upset by the Flames bringing in another player.
All players understand it is part of the business.
No one is handing Bennett the keys to the city here

Phaneuf may have won the Flames a Cup had he been signed and scored a goal in Game 6 of the Final. (but yeah sure, Dion might've also cost 'em a game too)

None of these guys in danger of losing their spot to Bennett have a right to be pissed, really. If they weren't playing like marginal NHLers we wouldn't be having this discussion and they would be safe.

Warrener definitely thought so. He blamed Sutter and the agent for playing hardball over his contract. So there you have it, a grumpy vet and right from the horse's mouth, they wanted that guy in the lineup. They were beaten up on defense.

No, but an extra year of the ELC is just as beneficial.

It's after 4 o'clock in the east. Getting a bit late to move him anywhere.
If the Flames really haven't made a decision yet, I would be pretty disappointed in Treliving. When you're the guy in charge, at some point you have to make up your mind.

Give him a shot
2 important games against weaker teams coming up. Throw him out there and see if he can give this team some ofensive spark. Right now as almost everyone has mentioned we only have one line that is providing any offence right now. Even if we make the playoffs a one line team is pretty easy to shut down over the long term. Having a second potential scoring line may help take the pressure off the 3rd and 4th lines.
If he doesn't perform or makes too many mistakes you pull him out and send him upstairs. This also gives an extra forward body without any call ups left is someone goes down.

You seriously believe that?
He will get paid eventually. If it happens one year earlier so be it. It's not like they don't see it coming.
Two rounds of playoffs on the other hand, is franchise-changing. It would be huge for this team.
It also means between $5 and $10M in profits for the owners, not that you would care about that,
I can only assume you were joking.

I thought playoffs don't count? I think the years remaining on his contract remain the same irregardless of the amount of playoff games he plays?
At this point everything at the disposal of the team should be in play to make the playoffs. The highest EVER draft pick of the Calgary Flames should be in Calgary and available to the coach if he sees fit.

Is there a deadline by which the Flames have to announce their intentions for Bennett?

Being a pro athlete is a short career window. If the big club is keeping a player away from the top league just to ensure they have an extra year of contract obligations, that's pretty skeezy, and just as irrational as the Oilers rushing kids but the exact opposite... Keeping them out of hte lineup for the sake of numbers and papers. Come on
It comes down to how ready they think he is, or at least I sincerely hope it does.

Wondering the same thing. At this point, even if he gets called up he probably won't be ready to play in Edmonton.

Playoffs count. The Habs burned a year if Subbans contract in 2010 when he played a part in their unlikely playoff run
