My guess is that PSL's are a big part of the funding plans for the Dome. The money has to come from somewhere if it isn't the government.

I few pages back I talked about the effect of the current $40-$50 oil. Selling those PSL is going to be a very hard sell right now in corporate Calgary. Companies are turning the screws on stationery and travel expenses - do you think they'll be lining up to pay tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) for PSL for hockey tickets?

Again, the current economic climate has likely forced Calgary Sport & Entertainment to jump through extra hoops, just like any other commercial real estate deal.

I think they will. The down economy is not going to stop Suncor or Cenovus from buying a box or 5 seats. There are enough large companies and wealth in this city to still buy out every available PSL at a new arena without a doubt.

What will the price of oil be in 3 or 4 or 5 years when they are selling the PSLs for the new arena?

A lot of the tickets are owned by individuals too, and I suspect people will pause more at a 10-30k hit for PSLs when their jobs are uncertain than they would have at $100 oil.

Maybe King is waiting to see if Flames make the playoffs.

If the Flames make it, there will be extra excitement around the arena announcement. If they don't make it, they might want to wait a bit for the disappointment to fade away.

What's the renewal %? What's the wait list #? I think the concern is a bit overblown (but the organization will never say that publicly)

LOL, if companies the size Suncor/Cenovus only buy 5 seats the Flames are screwed.

This "wealth" you speak of - think it's good optics for employees when you fire 30% of your staff, cut pay of existing people, and warn of a 3rd round of layoffs.....and then you go buy hundreds of thousands of dollars in hockey tickets?

Kleenex is getting scrutinized around here, let alone commiting to "hockey tickets".

Bottom line, the wealth is here, but it's being restrained.

Well, maybe in Utopialand where every corporation invests in their employees first and has no waste hockey tickets will become a needless expense and those dollars will be reinvested in two-ply for you.

Fact is, this team is only going to get better and better and the demand for hockey tickets will only increase.

I don't see any concerns with selling seats, boxes and PSL's in a new barn.

Lets look at Toronto for the cost of PSL's (Personal Seat Licenses). Yeah it's the Leafs but it gives you the idea that it's not going to be $5,000 or $10,000 to buy one, particularly in the lower bowl.

300 level PSL's at Air Canada Center are going for about $75K for a pair. Maybe that's high for TO, and high for Calgary but even if you halve it, we're probably looking at about $35K -$40K for a pair high in the 200 level.

Lots of us here have season tickets - I'd be willing to be many of us don't have an extra $30-40K to park with the Flames. (despite this being 1% CalgaryPuck)

The fact that you think this speaks volumes to your "this is outrageous the Flames haven't done anything yet" point of view. I'll bet 1stLand thinks the same.

The price of oil was in the tank when the Saddledome was first built, but that didn't stop O&G companies from buying box seats and season tickets.

That's a resale price. The Leafs didn't charge that much. The highest cost ones for the Leafs were $30k.

I don't know of a recent NHL arena with PSLs.. but Minnesota Vikings stadium will cost up to $10k but 80% below $3000.

As far as I can see only Toronto and Columbus have PSLs in the NHL. Pittsburgh opened up in 2010 and doesn't have them.

I'm pretty sure King said the Flames were not going to do PSLs at the STH event I was at. He was asked directly about it and he said it wasn't in the funding model.

Good, because I don't think I could justify a large one time expenditure like that on top of my seasons already.

It might be a decent investment long-term but you never know...
