I was raised in the environment of an evangelical church where it was a strict adherence to the bible. No drinking, no smoking, modest behaviour, modest dress, ie no ear rings for women, women had to have their heads covered in church and weren't allowed to speak in it, no one got divorced, absolutely no swearing or taking the lords name in vain, no musical instruments for church hymns, Sunday morning and evening church, Wed night bible study, sometimes series of gospel meetings 6 nights a week for months at a time, they preached that anyone who wasn't born again would go to hell, etc etc.
My sister and I dropped out when we were old enough to stand up for ourselves, ie mid teens. The extreme sexism really stands out to me now. My mom still is hardcore. Out of my grandparents combined 8 kids, not a descendent will still be in the church, or religious after my mother is gone. What a shame to live your life that way and then you die after wasting your life, IMHO.

Just went and read your posts, thanks.
Tough situation you're in, but at 20 I don't think you should act as someone you arent, even for the sake of your mom. I think its important to be yourself, and I would hope your parents would respect your choices.
What if you were gay? How would your mom react? You have to be yourself. I don't think it does anyone any favours to be silent about your atheism.

So your sayin sell his self esteem and dignity at $250 per week then? Using money to bribe people is disgusting and an example od corruption at it finest.

I don't understand why it's so difficult to tell your mother the truth.
Mom, God does not exist and until you can prove he does, I am skipping religion. I am a believer in reality not faith. Now get in the kitchen and knit me a sweater.

That's the thing. I don't think my mom will ever understand. So it's either go to church or live on the streets...

Then maybe try approaching it from a different angle. Even though the stories in the bible are suspect at best on their accuracy, there is still good life lessons to be learned from some of them.

It sure does him a favor not being homeless and all.
Hockey_ninja: I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Please heed my advice: If you are at all financially dependent on religious parents, and telling them would result in you being out on your own without the means to provide for yourself, then either start looking into atheist havens in your area, or keep your mouth shut until you can afford to leave.
I'm about as unabashedly an atheist as anyone here. I am all for being honest with yourself, but I am also for rational decision-making and self-preservation, and I don't think flaunting your lack of belief to someone who has the ability to make life very difficult for you in short order is a smart move.

Agreed. "If you're going to live under my roof..." and all that.
And really, if an hour a week is going to make your mom happy, well, there are worse things than making your mom happy. Even if she doesn't have the roof literally hanging over you.

I'd be more apt to look at it as a really high paying part-time job. If that's the case, I don't think it's reasonable to discuss it in terms of "selling his self esteem and dignity"for $250. It's also a very pragmatic choice at this point in his life.

This. I don't go to church for it (I probably would in the given scenario) but there are other similar things I do or don't do regarding religious beliefs that result in increased happiness for my mom.

He would probably be better off with the atheist statement I think. lying about your sexuality might be the deepend for her in the end.
