He has been nearly flawless since Gio went down and puts his body on the line each and every night for this team.
Comments like that after he makes a single mistake are absolutely ridiculous. Every person out there including yourself have made a mistake at some point in your life. He makes that play probably 99/100 times but just had a blunder today... The timing was rough, but I will gladly take a guy like Russell on the Flames any day of the week. He has been outstanding since joining the team, plain and simple.
|
If I changed it to "today" would that make you feel any better? I know most games he doesn't do something that dumb but today he did and it cost the Flames a point.

Didn't think we were near as bad as some posters here. Columbus collapsed well. Our PP should have been better, and we had 3 solid posts that could have changed the game. Happy to get a point in an awkward afternoon game.

Loser point is better than nothing but this is a team you have to beat on home ice. Hurts even worse knowing Bourque handed them the loss.

One horrible play in your own zone can lose a game, Russell, so careless. But while Russell is an indisputable goat for this one, the lack of offensive contribution from Stajan, Raymond, Backlund and Colborne was very noticeable today. Bouma did show up and did his usual part. Bollig was Bollig. Granlund is still a rookie, no high expectations. But those four guys must start contributing consistently. They are supposedly skilled forwards... Such a heart-breaker this game was.

Like I said, I'm going to blame it on that play. You can blame it on whatever you want.
|
Not even close to equivalent. Players make mistakes. Nik Lidstrom has made mistakes like this, so has every other Norris winning player in the league history. Name me one person who has played an entire career so perfectly that they are okay in your books? There's a reason this is a team sport, every player will make bad mistakes from time to time. I remember you used this exact same schtick on Hiller after a loss in which he let in some softies. You're attitude is ridiculously played. out. You are by far the worst person here when it comes to insight and knowledgable input.

Losses hurt your chances more than wins as wins tend to just maintain the pace. That said if the Flames get two points the Kings chances probably dip by more than 16.3%. You have to move on to the next game but I'm starting to get worried about the goaltending situation here as it seems like the Flames goaltenders are either very good or below average/bad and it's a coin flip night to night. It's probably a bit part of the reason outside of no secondary scoring why they have been on a win, loss, loss, win, loss, win kind of run as of late.

The Flames were the better team, but I disagree that Bobrovsky stole it. He faced a lot of shots, but how many were quality? That was exactly the kind of game we play. A lot of shots, but not nearly enough challenging ones. Columbus tried to give us that game over and over and over again in the third, and we just kept on missing passes or shooting wide. And when we did threaten to get into a good area, Columbus' defence tightened up.
We threw this game away - and I don't mean just Russell. We let the laziest player in the NHL score on us twice. That alone makes this a well deserved L.

I always find it interesting that the Flames best corsi games don't regularly result in 2 points.

Well, Stajan isn't going to do much offensively if he's going to be saddled with Ferland and Bollig. Hartley really needs to put Shore in for one of those two.
But I agree with your overall point. The second and third lines need to produce. The top three can't shoulder the load all by themselves.

I think that's because it comes down the goaltending letting in a goal they should've had. Otherwise Flames may have won those games that they've lost by one.
Have Ramo or Hiller had a shutout at all this year yet? I know Ortio has, but that may be the only one the team has gotten all season?

It's because the way we play, we are content to zone the opposition to the perimeter in the D-zone and get in as many shooting lanes possible. Flames are content to have Ramo/Hiller have the long, easy shot and not give up any prime scoring chances. On offense, we try to set up those golden opportunities before finishing.
When the Flames generally get out corsi-ed playing that strat and lose, it means that those opportunities that opponents got were really dangerous. It's also indicative of the Flames either running into a hot goalie or gave him too many easy shots.
Which is what ended up happening a lot on that 8 game skid.
Tonight I noticed a lot of Flames shooters trying to go glove side on Bobrovsky too. They gotta pick blocker against the hot goalies. Engelland needs to learn how to not ice the puck.

Yes, Ramo had two back to back shutouts on the road, vs PHX and SJ I believe. Then he had a stinker of a game and lost the starting position.

Ramo has 2 and Hiller 1.
4 in total with Joni's added in.

I agree - they really need to reshuffle lines 2 and 3. I thought the 4th line played pretty good. But really didnt see a lot from 2 and 3.
Dont think you can mess around with the number one line but something isnt working on the other two. Maybe Byron coming back will give them some extra jump.
Raymond can sit down for all he is contributing. Colborne is skating hard but just has no creativity with the puck right now - confidence??

Ramo had back to back shutouts on the road earlier this year, Hiller has one

More opportunities for turnovers when we're controlling the puck than to turn other teams over.
Lower percentage shots going right into goaltenders' chests all game. Bobrovsky had a sound game but he did not steal it.
Less patience on shot attempts when team have thier sticks and bodies on the ice.
The Kings are the best corsi team in the league and they're not even in a playoff spot. They've won in the playoffs but maybe that's more of a testament to refs eating whistles on interference come playoff time than corsi.

I think rather than focus on one play, it was more a case of far too many casual plays from lots of players later in the 3rd and OT. I didn't think Ramo's positioning was great on either backhand goal, looks like he was off on his angle on the tying one and was too far off the post on the winning one. I didn't like the pass through the middle on CBJ's first goal, that was a bad give away too.
Lots of little mistakes today, and obviously one big thing, but doesn't seem right to focus on that as the sole reason for the loss.

Some posters here are being ignoramuses. Not gonna pouint fingers, but you know who you are.
We aren't even in the playoff mix without Russel and Wideman playing way beyond their expectations this year. They are both having career years.
Just be glad they gave you the opportunity to give such a crap 70 games into the season. Russell has been an obsolute stud this year, as has Wideman. A lot of players have made big mistakes, I can think of one in particular that likely cost a team a Stanley Cup in 1986, and he still went on to have a great career.
If one given up bad goal costs us a playoff berth, we shouldn't even be in it anyway. Do some math. Russell have about 8 billion blocked shots this year, and has probably stopped 20-30 scoring chances as such. Give the guy a frikkin break over one boneheaded error.
