Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
It's a neck injury for Smid related to neck fusion surgery he had a few years ago. Recovery expected for next season. #Flames

Too bad. The new baby-daddies have been on fire recently and Smid had twins, which should have given him a double boost.

lol why is to so hard to believe that the Flames just want an extra body for the playoff drive considering we're down two guys?

We need someone to slot in occasionally and play limited minutes so that the regulars can take a break here and there. You don't want to call up guys from the farm to sit and do nothing for most of the time when they could be playing.

No Risk, Little to No Reward.

Mark Spector @SportsnetSpec
Douglas Murray says he has has lost 15 lbs. He CAN NOT play in the playoffs however for CGY, so he's just trying to restart his NHL career.

15 lbs lost could help with his mobility

Ah crap. I feel really bad for Smid, the guy is such a warrior. Not the most talented defenseman, but always willing to sacrifice his body for the team ... I have a soft spot for guys like that. Hope he fully heals ASAP.

So the Flames have lost their best defenseman, a solid bottom pairing defenseman and their second best D prospect in pro hockey, all done for the season ... this sucks.

Huska going to train him up like McGrats to be able to slot up every once in a while for the Big Club next year?

Is Murray a character guy?

Agree except the reward is if he performs well to the point he is an option for 5-6-7 next year.

Douglas Murray sounds more Scottish to me.

Lets be honest, this pickup is for the end of season kegger celebrating the Flames' Stanley Cup win.

Sharks blueliner finds Swede way to tap into kegs

Murray may be known for patrolling the blueline for the Sharks as they face the Flames in their opening-round playoff series, but sports fans of all ilk must appreciate what he and friends came up with in between their scholastic and sporting endeavours in their college days.

UberTap is a system that uses a foot pump to extract the liquid gold, and three spouts to fill the glasses.

Imagine that. Three glasses being filled simultaneously.

To borrow phrase sudsy connoisseurs know -- brilliant.

"It took too long to get beer in college. It's about five times as fast to fill up," Murray said. "Since I've been in the NHL, I haven't been involved as much, my partner is running it. When I was in the minors, there was more time."

Neck Fusion surgery?

Wow, that's surprising.

Must have been just a couple of vertebrae, otherwise I can't believe he'd be cleared to play.

Not to be a debbie downer, but even though they are saying he should be ready for next season, that's a serious injury to be dealing with re-aggravating.

I thought Smid was done due to concussion concerns, this is surprising.

Would someone please think of the prospects!!!

Another veteran to take the place of prospects!!!

How will prospects ever make it to the Flames!?!?!

All our prospects will want to be traded!!!

Tom Erixon and Sven Baerstchi are right!!! This organization doesn't give young players a chance!!!

Ah man, I feel bad for Smid. Solid player, he'd be a real solid bottom pairing guy right now. How that Despres hit on him didn't receive as much as a sniff of a suspension from the NHL is really unbelievable. Pretty sad.

Is it Scottish? Okay, like I said, I was going off of memory. Otherwise, swap Scottish for Irish in the story and that's the reason for his name.

I guess I should have double-checked his Wikipedia page:
Quote:
Murray's maternal grandfather is Swedish hockey player and Olympic bronze-medalist Lasse Björn. His paternal ancestors originate from Scotland. While his cousins all have Swedish names, his mother gave her children Scottish or English names. Murray's brothers are named Charles and Ted, with a sister named Roseanna.
