5 goals? Part of me can't believe that isn't a typo.

With the 34th overall pick the Flames select G Mason McDonald
There's no way he's scored 5 goals. I'm going to need to see the receipts on that one.
Edit - I see now, he's had 5 EN goals scored against him. That makes more sense, lol.

I always assumed EN was Empty net goals scored by the goaltender. What's the point of EN goals against on their own stat sheet then?
Mah bad. Confusing stat to track for a tender...
Quote:
Empty net goals are charged to the goaltender that was previously in net as empty net goals against (abbreviated as EN, ENG or ENA). Empty net goals do not count against a goaltender's goals against average or their save percentage, but rather are tracked separately.

At first I was a little worried seeing only a 0.905 sv percentage until I checked to see it's the 3rd best in the Q for starting goalies.

I've considered EN to demonstrate how well a goalie plays in close games. It's an imperfect stat like +/-
But the more EN the more likely a goalie will crack under pressure.
Again a very imperfect stat.
On the other hand you could knock the GAA down knowing that the goalie hasn't played X full games.

The Q is always a defensive circus. But goalies that can thrive in that environment will only get better with the structure of pro hockey.

I don't really see how EN goals would potentially indicate a goalie cracks under pressure. Can you elaborate?
Without looking at this stat, I would just assume it indicates which goalies are on good/bad teams (unless your an advanced stat anomaly such as Calgary). Bad teams will be behind more often and therefore have to pull their goalie more often. I guess you could argue a good goalie would keep more games close to warrant getting pulled with 2 minutes left.

Yep..he is a top goaltender within his respective league at 18 years old, that's quite the accomplishment.
In addition to that if you are to compare his numbers to the backup goaltender in Charlottetown you realize they are not even in the same ballpark (.905 vs .855 ). He is without a doubt the teams MVP.

HF has McDonald as #1 among drafted goalies in the QMJHL ... yes, ahead of a certain Habs pick too.
Quote:
1. Mason McDonald, Charlottetown Islanders
Drafted: 2nd round, 34th overall, 2014 (CGY)
At 6’4 and 186 pounds, it isn’t hard to see why McDonald was the first goaltender selected in the 2014 NHL Draft. The Halifax native had a size advantage over most of his 18-year-old counterparts and, after a mid-season trade from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan last year, posted a solid .907 save percentage in 16 games with Charlottetown.
It has been an up-and-down 2014-15 season for both McDonald and his Islanders teammates, but, over the long run, the lanky netminder has been one of the league’s best. His goals-against average – 3.07 – is seventh-best among QMJHL goaltenders, while his .906 save percentage is third-best in the league. McDonald’s season got off to a great start, and in the month of October he posted a .915 save percentage. His save percentage the next two months was .886 and .900, but in January McDonald posted his first shutout to go along with a 2.30 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. He’ll likely be a candidate for the Canadian World Junior team next year with Zach Fucale and Eric Comrie no longer eligible.

So we have NCAA's best goalie, Q's best goalie. One of the best in the A. Just need W and O this draft and we're good.

Wonder if they'll give him a call-up to the AHL if his team gets beat out early? I doubt he'd play any, but some practice time wouldn't hurt.

They see a lot of rubber in the Q. Personally I feel the more rubber they see in junior the better as playing behind really good defenses can hide deficiencies.

I'm guessing he's still eligible for the WJC this year? Hope he doesn't get snubbed like Brossoit did a couple years ago.

I am sure that he can't be called up to the AHL even if the Islanders are out of the playoffs, he will be going back to the Q next season.
I have seen him play a few times this year. I think he is always in the right place to make the save. Not to many highlight reel saves. He makes the save look easy.

Yes he can. As a junior player, he can go to the AHL on an Amateur Tryout once his junior season ends and still be eligible to play junior next season (the Flames did this with Kulak two years ago).

Hockey Canada seems to put a lot of stock in past experience with the program.
And he played with the U18 program and the U17 program.
He is probably the leading candidate for the WJ team at the moment
