Although I am partial to more conventional names, you can't go wrong with naming your kid Helmut.

Parents nowadays GMG. I'm going to name my kids Bob, Jim, Jane, or Sarah, just to restore some commonality to names.
I swear if I see one more facebook post about someone having a kid, and their name has a non-standard "Y" in it. I'm gonna lose my s**t. "Maiylya" is not a name!

I definitely prefer: Myla

It actually has a HUGE impact on a child in their developmental years.
Mind you, there's the whole nature vs nurture argument but I've never met a Barbie who wasn't a bimbo. Children grow to develop a personality reflective of the name they're given.

I would love to see any kind of research that shows this that factors in demographics. I don't buy it at all.

The study I remember reading about names, was that what you named your child had less impact then people thought. But the name you gave your child was much more likely to reveal a LOT about the parents...race, education, etc.

Helmut is a perfectly conventional name in Germany.

I think there was a case study in "Freakonomics" or "Outliers" about such a thing. A man named his two children "Loser" and "Winner", and "Loser" ended up leading a more successful life.

This.
My cousin's 4 year old girl has the middle name Ahsoka (normal first name thankfully). I don't think it's a coincidence that they have a custom ceramic 4 foot high slave1+bobba water fountain in their back yard.

My youngest has a really weird Dutch name as a middle name because my wife wanted to put her Dad's name in there, which happens to be a really weird Dutch name. I guess it's not a big deal as a middle name. It only gets used when they're in trouble.

We are seriously considering naming our first born girl, Mika. Originally, it was going to be our first son's name but my wife actually thinks it would be fit for a girl (and she likes it more importantly!). Upon further research, it fits for both. I love the fact that she could be named after my all-time favorite goaltender. Honest thoughts? She is due in August 2015.

It's your daughter. Only your and your wife's opinion matters.
This isn't meant to sound jerkish, but names mean different things for people because of their experiences with individuals who the name as well. You can see in this thread that people have irrational reasons for not liking names.
In my opinion, you never tell people what you're going to name your child before the baby is born. They says stupid things like "I knew a insert name in high school. He was a jerk.".
Just don't let anyone convince you to put a "y" instead of an "i" to make the name "unyque".

My mother in law hates our daughter's name, and we get a mixed reaction when I say her name is Posey. Usually because someone is thinking of the folk limerick "Ring around the Rosie, pockets full of posies, ashes to ashes we all fall down"
We just liked it as a name.

I like it, but would consider changing the spelling to make it easier on her.
I would think that Mika would get varied guesses of pronunciations, like Mick-Ah, or Mike-Ah. She'll get tired of correcting people, and so will you. I have to spell my name every single day of my life, so I can somewhat relate. I'm not a fan of funky alterations of spelling in names, but could you spell it like Meeka?

Yeah thought of that but we live overseas so will be less of an issue but yes, will still be an issue. I love the spelling of the name Mika as opposed to Meeka but we'll think about it for sure. Thanks!

I have loved so many names for both boys and girls but when you teach a student with the name you like and they turn out to be a little jerk it ruins the name. I'm so screwed when it comes time to name my kids.

Like it. Kipper is Mikka which makes it slightly different and not a direct connection but an awesome one for you. As someone who likes to change people's names to something similar or come up with a connection I don't have an immediate one. She will get called Mick-ah at first by some people. It's a nice simple name that isn't spelled weird or sound like you were high when you made it up.
Potential nickname: Mik like Mick or Meesh. Nothing much there. Your hockey friends will call her Kipper.

Honestly, my first reaction was what? I immediately went Poser....and then thought of the nursery rhyme you note above which I link back to the plague. Likely not an issue for the younger generation though as there are many weirder names out there.
I had to look it up and it seems reasonably common for England. It really doesn't matter what any of us think though because you've named her already.
Potential nicknames: if the word is ever in with her generation then Poser other than that it already is a nickname. Maybe gets shortened to Pose. The good thing is other than the nursery rhyme there is no immediate taunting name that comes to mind.

You need to get him Silvertips gear. http://everett-silvertips.myshopify....ons/kids-items
Potential nickname: Rett/Rhett, Ev, Ever. "Everetty Bunny" but that's a stretch.
