You can speak for yourself and allow me the same respect. Until the franchise is buried 6 feet under or relocated they will always be a rival, just because they are not competitive just makes it more enjoyable for me
It natural for those that have been looking down (standings) at them for so long to not consider them a rival, but don't think for a minute that I'm not ready to kick them down every chance they try and climb that ladder.... and I'll laugh at them as they fall
As long as the hatred still at the core, any time when supremacy will be threaten the rivalry will be without doubt... We just haven't had any meaningful hockey between the two tens in decades... All it will take is one series (a loss even more) for the young ones to fully understand that it will never die
^%&$ the Oilers

Flames-Oilers and Flames-Nucks are different kinds of rivalries.
Flames-Oilers is like a sibling rivalry. The Oilers are the older brother, who was a cool jock in high school always picking on the younger-brother, "stupid kid" Flames and acting like a bully. Now that they've grown up, the "cool jock" Oilers have settled into their career as a sweatpants-wearing pizza delivery boy, while the "stupid kid" Flames are embarking on a lucrative career and actually making something of themselves. We don't really want to hang around the Oilers, and they're a bit of an embarrassment to the family, but we still don't want to see any real harm come to them. That said, they sure deserve a life as a Pizza Boy after what they did to us as kids, and we hope that's where they stay!
Flames-Nucks is more reminiscent of someone's relationship with a pot-growing next-door neighbour. They're noisy, dangerous, and they have no concern for anyone around them. They think they're awesome in their flat-brim caps, gold chains, and leased Chrysler 300s with ground effects, while everyone around them knows that only one word applies: dou***. Like our pizza-delivering older brother, we really just want to avoid these neighbours. But unlike our brother, we feel an obvious sense of schadenfreude when our drug-dealing neighbours get visited by the cops and taken to jail for a few days, whereas we only feel shame and pity when our brother goes so far down-and-out that he ends up in the drunk tank.
Flames-Nucks is more intense, for now, but Flames-Oilers is deeper and longer-lasting.

A few people have tried to take this stance but it just doesn't make sense if you're looking at the definition of the word "rival"
Quote:
ri·val

noun
1.
a person or thing competing with another for the same objective or for superiority in the same field of activity.

The bottom line is that the Oilers are not (and have not) been competitive with us for years.
There is no rivalry to speak of on the ice in the last few years because we've dominated the Oilers with consistency.
Maybe if and when that team ever climbs out of the basement, there might be a rivalry again some day.
But by the definition of the word, there is no rivalry right now and there hasn't been for years.

Yea, this is probably why I don't consider them much of a rival. I didn't get to witness the Battle of Alberta in the 80s. The Oilers have only made the playoffs one time since I started watching hockey. It's really kind of pathetic.

hockey at its finest Other teams just hated doing the Alberta road trip cause they'd get beat on the score board and physically.

Yeah pretty easy to understand.
The Canucks are a good team and have been for a while. They're competitive and we've had recent bad blood and heated games with them.
The Oilers are just pathetic. You can't help but pity their fans at this point. I almost wish they were better so we could reignite the BOA but it seems like they're doing everything in their power to stop that.
If one team could ruin a McEichel, it's Edmonton.

You definition of the explanation is a narrow one and only fills the role in which you attribute to it. Don't worry, no harm as a few people have tried to take that stance but the bottom line the Oilers are a rival whether you acknowledge or not

For some reason winning against Vancouver is just some much more satisfying. Maybe its because I find Canuck fans overly daft regarding the game of hockey and just downright destructive when things don't go right. What a bunch of divey whiners too.
The oilers are just plain embarrasing and although its fun to take the 2 points...it would be better for the game of hockey if they would learn to play it better. I was "lightly" bugging my buddy about the oilers being so bad and he just flat out said he wasn't cheering for them anymore and converted himself to be a Kings fan. One less jersey to pick up!
