The sloppy seconds comment, while rude and crass, is based on actual fact which is a defense in defamation.

I suppose. Maybe more people.could handle.it like Charles Barkley. Didn't he say he was going to sue somebody for defamation of character, but then realized he had no character? I think that one would fit their overpaid defenseman.

Avery was also suspended for those comments, forced to take sensitivity training (IIRC), caused the Stars to dump him and that incident pretty much started his treadmill right out of the league.

Also, I wouldn't say Avery got away with the sloppy seconds comment. He was suspended by the league for 6 games because of it, and he never played another game for the Stars after it. He also issued an apology for the comment.

What about Lupul and Cuthbert? That single tweet actually defamed three people.

How about his wife? What did she do to be wrongly accused by a national network of cheating on her husband and have it broadcast to millions of people.

Life in the spotlight. I'm sure its not the first or the last time she will run into these types of things. I guess my take on it is that everything gets so far blown out of proportion anymore that it's frustrating.

All the more reason to avoid social media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. I can't wait until this social media fad fades away and all those companies come crashing down. A world without hashtags, @ symbols and status updates will be a better place.

To successfully sue for libel, I was under the impression you had to prove that it caused you lost wages/opportunity. I'm not seeing how this is that, not that it excuses TSN at all mind you, they have major egg on their face here. Ironically, it will be their reputation that takes the biggest hit over this I'd imagine.
TSN will probably give them money to get them to drop the suit, but how is that really going to help them other than by making them 1% richer? Now the public is a lot more aware of the tweet than they otherwise would've been. Classic Streisand effect. I'm not sure making their grievances public so fast was all that smart if they were hoping to minimize damage to their reputation.
I wonder if they even approached TSN before they made that public statement. Perhaps TSN balked at the demands but something tells me that statement was the first they heard that the lawyers were indeed involved.
Anyone know how Burke's lawsuit is going? I had almost forgotten about that one until this made the news. That's another one I'm not sure how it's provable that lost wages/opportunity occurred.

Jesus...life in the spotlight does not let people make up false and derogatory statements and broadcast them on tv. Do people actually believe that that is okay? Really?

No matter what happens, this seriously hurts TSNs relationship with the current Leafs and NHL players in general. They try so hard to be the "news breaker", which always requires a good relationship with the home team.
If I was an NHL player, manager or coach, I wouldn't be feeding them anything at this point.

Yup. They already lost most NHL hockey, now this happens. It's a disaster.

This is never going to happen, social media isn't going anywhere. If Facebook and Twitter die, something will replace them.
