So who gets a regular spot on the LW with Glenny now departed? Ferland stays up?

As I learnt prior to the trade, Glencross is easily replaced and upgraded on by many wingers we currently have in the system, from Sven to Piorier, so it really doesn't matter. This trade is apparently addition by subtraction with a special bonus of a 2nd and 3rd round picks thrown in for fun.

Treliving is a genius who managed to improve the team today, and still add to our rebuild plan. A rare piece of GMing magic.

a 32 year old impending UFA that can walk away from WSH at the end of the season for nothing, and we get a 2nd and a 3rd for him?

that's grand larceny.

no offense, but anyone that thinks we lost this trade must be related to Glencross.

Wow. Why so sour?

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

On having his name mentioned in trade rumors for the past month:
It’s tough. Every day you go to the rink and you’re not sure what’s going to happen, if you’re going to finish that day at the rink or play in that game, or come to a pregame skate and not play that night. You’re overthinking. I wanted something to get done and move forward and I’m excited to be here in Wash.
Quote:
On whether he knew the Capitals were interested in him:
When I got asked to waive my no-move clause Washington was one of the teams that showed interest right off the hop. They were on our list and it was a waiting game to see what was out there. When it was finally done and I knew I was coming to Washington I was excited.

On getting asked by the Flames to waive his no-movement clause:
My theory is when you’re getting asked to leave, you’ve got to move on, too. I love the Flames organization and I love everything it did for me. But once you hear that, you want to do go and prove you can play. It’s been a tough last month knowing things were going to change and you just want to get it done.

I like Glencross' honesty. he's saying the right things...but I believe he means them.

Caps are my East team this year. Hope he tears it up.

As much as I'd want those two picks to be early picks, I'll be cheering for the Caps to make it out of the East.

I'll be hoping for a first round exit. Glencross will be rewarded this off season. 20+ million I'm sure will ease his pain.

I'm curious as to what Baertschi and Poirier have done this year to prove that they're currently an upgrade on Glencross?

I'm also curious as to how you know this is addition by subtraction, considering that they've played a total of 0 games since the trade?

I can answer that one (not that I necessarily agree with the answer). The team has had a better record this season when Glencross was out of the lineup. It's a small sample size and ignores a lot of other factors, but it's something.

Clearly the team has less depth without Glencross, but he has been cold lately, and giving his roster spot to another player probably won't hurt the team much, if any. It certainly makes very little difference compared to losing Giordano.

There's a joke that they used to tell in Russia back in the 90s. One of the brand-new Russian billionaires gets into a terrible car crash and is horribly injured. Seeing that his car has been totalled, he flips out and starts yelling, ‘Bozhe moi! My Mercedes!’

A passerby is appalled to see this. ‘How can you cry about material things? Here you are worrying about a car, and your left arm just got cut off!’

‘It did?’ says the billionaire. Then he looks down at the stump of his arm and flips out again. ‘Bozhe moi! My Rolex!’

Replacing Glencross in the lineup is not the Flames' biggest problem.

You make some good points, things I myself use think and ponder about. But then, I read right here on this very site that Glencross was simply not the player he once was, and the Flames would actually be a better team if they played one of the young guys from the farm in his place, and that Glencross was actually occupying their spot on the roster because he was an on contract veteran. So, seeing this trade go down was reliefbon many levels. One, more picks for the future and two, it will finally force Hartley to have to play one of the true deserving players we have on the farm in place of an on contract vet, making us a better team in the process.

I am impressed by Treliving. He got a little more than what Nonis got for Winnik and a little less than what Maloney got for Vermette. In other words he got exactly what almost any GM would have got for Glencross. The rest of the NHL has been told, the new Flames will settle for nothing less than what everyone else could get for the same asset. Somewhere Burke is smiling and saying "see I knew I could re-establish Calgary's image of being a team that will only accept at a bare minimum what the rest of the league is paying at that time for market value in similar trades".
