Granlund is also buried at centre. His status as a prospect who has already shown he can take an NHL shift might be enough to convince a team that giving up a decent defensive prospect is worthwhile in a trade for Glencross. Deal from an area of strength to fill a hole elsewhere.

You're not far off. NHLNumbers used to be a hockeybuzz site. They left to join the nation network, which might not be that big of an improvement.

Darren Haynes via twitter yesterday.

Imagine being on the PK the entire game and only giving up one goal. That's essentially what Dennis Wideman has done.

What's painful about that graph is where our 'defensive defencemen’ Engelland and Smid sit on it.

I thought Wideman had a good game against the Wild. Looked like he was 'feeling it'. I don't think he'll be going anywhere soon.

Considering he's played 57 games it shows to me that he averages basically 1 min of pk time per game which makes that stat a little less impressive considering he primarily seems to be sent out in the twilight seconds of a PK. Its a lot easier to defend a PK when your hoping over the boards with 30-40 seconds left in it and the puck heading into their zone as you hop over and switch up. Not trying to take anything away from Dennis but its clear he gets the easier minutes of PK time.

Bouma is doing everything I'd expect Bickel to do if he came here. I'd much rather have Sharp out of the two bad contracts and have to agree that Bickel would look out of place in a different system.

Ward played Granlund a ton at wing for the sole purpose that it increases his chances of making the big club.

In the words of Wu-Tang Clan: Ward was trying to diversify Granlund's bonds.

I sincerely hope Tampa Bay get involved in the sweepstakes.

In addition to the players mentioned earlier, I also like Dylan Blujus.

... and Jonathan Drouin of course. But we'd have to make the deal now for it to make any sense for Tampa.

Sending them a retained Wideman means now YOU risk the possibility of losing Boychuk to free agency for nothing and yet you're stuck with half of Wideman's cap hit.

So basically you're left with 50% Wideman Cap hit + Pulock after you've given up Baertschi + Wideman.

There's also the fact that Granlund played LW as a junior next to C Mikael Granlund

If Pulock turned out to be the next Al MacInnis you take that deal. He's not a sure thing, but he's a great prospect.

Had to look up Glencross online...had never heard of him. What exactly makes him any better than a Mike Santorelli? Doesn't seem special to me and how does he have a NTC?

Having scored more goals than Santorelli's played games probably counts for something.

Useful if he remains with the organization.

But we aren't getting defensive prospects without giving up something we don't want to lose. If it isn't Granlund, it will be someone we are equally uneasy with parting with.

A .266 career goals per game average (22 goals a full season) VS Santorelli's .171 (14 goals a full season)
Absurdly high shooting percentages his whole career (8th among active players for career)
In what's one of his least aggressive seasons, has 97 hits in 49 games while Santorelli has 47 hits in 57 games
Reliable on shut down defensive lines

etc.
