I think I'm out of touch with this one. It just seems like it is all too common these days to see these types of defensemen sign big deals like this only to drop off after a couple of seasons. I think it's a case of his current team making him whole after playing for a few seasons on what turned out to be a discount given his role.
I just don't think he would have received this much on a 5-year term if he went UFA. $4.9 million per year over 2 or 3 years, sure.. For a 5 year deal, I would have expected a slightly lower yearly rate. It's not terrible, but not what I would call a great deal either.

Although every year when July 1st comes around, some pretty surprising things usually happen.

Edit: Sorry, I just saw it was 4 years. I don't know why I thought 5... makes it better.

Nice deal by the Sens. Pretty good dollars and term. There would have been demand for him on the open market and I'm sure he could have got more than this.

Every signing of every defenseman for the next 4 or 5 years is going to result in a series of posts praising the Brodie contract.
 (and rightfully so)

Its really 11 teams though right? No one actually has to say 'the Oilers,' by this point it must be just implied.

GM: "Yes, yes, you can name any 10 teams we cant trade you to. And the Oilers. Of course the Oilers. That goes without saying."

I'd want my 'No Oilers clause' written in the GM's blood on iron boiler-plate. Literally, iron used in making boilers.

The going rate, don't you think? maybe expensive, but a lot of guys signing for similar numbers lately.

Talk on HNIC was possibly a 5 handle for Tanev. I would rather have Methot than Tanev.
