First round pick in a great draft. Both guys they gave up are UFAs.

I agree, even at the late stages of the draft, but Franson and Santorelli are going to be huge pieces for the Predators... and the only roster player they gave up was struggling and had nothing to do with their success this year.
Nashville looks incredibly dangerous for the playoffs.

Poor Olli.

Great to see true hockey deals in this deal and the Kane-to-Sabres deals. The deals where you can truly argue one way or the other who got the best of the deal versus the hockey business type deals.
Preds obviously get stronger for shortterm, but like this deal for the Leafs.
60-40 in favour of Leafs imo.

Poor Olli. I'd imagine he wasn't happy to hear about that trade. Hopefully the Leafs can get something for him so that he can go to a contender. Always have had a soft spot for him.

Good deal. Wonder if a small D-man Flurry picks up now before the deadline. The two bigger fish in the trade market are gone now.

He is smallish, and he is very fast, but I wouldn't compare him to Byron. He is an offensive player and if he wants to be an NHLer, he is going to have to make top 6. With his size, its an uphill battle, but not impossible.
He played with Petan in Portland and was the last cut for TC in last year's WJC. He's a good player and a decent prospect who has put up good numbers in the AHL as a rookie (similar to Poirier)

Good trade for both teams, IMO.
I would assume that the Leafs look to move Jokinen before the deadline. Let's say they get a 3rd (maybe that means they retain salary).
That would mean a late 1st, a pretty good prospect, and a 3rd (or 4th) for 2 UFAs.

And what's with 1st rounders being traded for UFAs? That can't be right, can it?

Gotta say that I like this trade for the Preds a lot more than I like it for the Leafs.
Sure, the Leafs flip two UFAs for a 1st, the pick is pretty much all Toronto was after, but the Preds are going to make a run and generally have good luck re-signing UFAs.
If Franson fits and the Preds can keep him I feel this would be a slam-dunk for them. He alone, signed to a decent contract on a team like Nashville is worth more than a very late first round pick.

Good trade for both teams. Preds get depth at a reasonable cost, Leafs get assets for players that initially were acquired for nothing.

Yeah, but he is going to test the market this summer. 27 year old UFA Defenceman are a pretty rare commodity. I expect that he will not be a Predator come July 7th. I don't see Nashville paying a premium for a guy who will be their #4.

I think this works well for both teams.
Helps the leafs with the tanking as well. Carolina has looked a bit better lately and could pass them.

Pretty scary that the Preds have been rolling of late, now add Franson, and will get Ryan Ellis back before playoffs. Probably the best defense group top to bottom in the league, with the likely Vezina winner in net and some good depth offensively. Predators will definitely make some noise this year.

So according to CBC sports the Maple Leafs are "officially rebuilding"
Should we expect more and bigger trades to come?

I would say yes but for the big names like Phaneuf and Kessel theyll likely not get anything done until the offseason. I still expect Toronto to make some big splash before the deadline. MAybe ship out Lupul or something

I don't think they have any other option than burning this team to the ground and start from scratch ... I could easily see them trade Phaneuf and Winnik before the deadline.

What a ridiculous D core, and they have a wealth of RHD as well.
Josi - Weber
Ekholm - Jones
Bartley - Franson
Volchenkov - Ellis (both injured)

Santorelli is going to be a huge... HUGE addition as well. going to fit in brilliantly on the rw in their top 9.
