Randy Sportak @SUNRandySportak
Forgot to note this right away. #Flames coach Hartley said Jonas Hiller is to start tomorrow vs. Sharks. Yeah, it’s no surprise.

Someone asked (in another thread I believe) what the Flames record was with Sven in the line up this year. I would be curious about that as well if someone doesn't mind doing the leg work.

For some reason it just seems the team plays well with him in the line up. Maybe an actual record comparison would refute that, but it would be interesting to know.

I wonder what the plan is for the goalies. This is a big game and you can't fault Hartley for going with Hiller because he's been solid lately. At the same time, you have to wonder when Ramo's going to get another shot. His contract is up this season, the trade deadline is coming up and he hasn't played in almost two months. He's got to get in some time and there aren't any soft games in the schedule. In hindsight it probably would have been a good idea to play him against the Oilers.

While it can be argued that its totally coincidental (and we can argue that another time), some players just bring certain intangibles to a team even if they aren't touching the scoreboard every night. Whether they keep the room loose or are good on the bench. Sven could be one of those guys.

He's a -3 player in those games, how does it make sense?

Because Devin Setoguchi was pretty terrible.

Oh right, it's Setoguchi's fault. Carry on.

Having Sven replace Byron on the 4th line doesn't make any sense. Byron can actually play the 4th line role well, Sven on the other hand needs to higher up the line-up to be effective.

Opinions are often improved if they are rooted in fact.

My ideal lineup with current injuries:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler
Baertschi-Backlund-Jones
Raymond-Jooris-Colborne
Bouma-Stajan-Byron

Gio-Brodie
Russell-Wideman
Wotherspoon-Diaz

The really good forecheckers seem to anticipate the defender turning and manage to disrupt the play. If you just go in and bump the back of the defender as he's moving the puck you end up behind the play going the other way. It's not a size or muscle thing - Byron does it pretty well. It's more thinking ahead.
I appreciate what Byron does but I think Sven could play it a bit differently and still be effective. I'd rather he emulate TJ Brodie's strategy. Rather than going in for shoulder-to-shoulder checks along the boards, he tends to take that extra half-stride to nudge himself just in front of the player. He effectively throws a body check at a guy's stick in order to position himself between the player and the puck.

Yeah, that's what everyone has reported about Sven. A real cut-up in the room, a leader on the bench.

The Flames are 1-0 with Wolf and with Shore. 3-2 with Ferland.

Has there ever been anything negative said about Sven in the dressing room?

He seemed to be pouty last season when sent down, but that's it.

Yup, smart. I was telling my kid to do that in PeeWee (non contact of course) because he was going for the puck along the boards and getting body contact penalties. Pin the stick, get the puck.

No, but there tends to be stories about guys who are leaders like Gio and Stajan and/or guys who loosen things up, like McGrattan and Bouma. By all accounts Sven is a quiet guy.
