If there are only 6 countries that are worthy combatants, why not just have a tournament with 6 teams? Why put 2 extra crap "all-star" teams in where no one cares about?

All that's missing is a team of retired stars.

They should have one 'Super All-Star Team' to be the Harlem Globetrotters and then have the Edmonton Oilers be the last team as the Washington Generals.

Instantly turns it into a joke.
Not only that, but it delays the establishment of the tourney - no way they get these stupid all-star team formats right the first time, which means continual fidgeting and modifications for several iterations until they find something that sticks.
Hot garbage.

So if Team USA wants Johnny Hockey on their roster (as I presume they would) and Team NA young guns wants Johnny on their roster (as they most assuredly would). How do they determine who gets first crack??

They would probably just saw him in half.

Various redevelopment schemes were proposed, most notably an entertainment complex containing retail shops and cinemas (similar to the redevelopment of the Montreal Forum), but these plans were abandoned when it was discovered that the tiered arena seating was holding up the exterior walls of the building, acting as a form of interior flying buttress. If the bowl of seating were removed, therefore, the exterior walls would lose most of their support.

What if that "young guns' team has Monahan, Gaudreau and Bennett on it? I would be more inclined to watch them then perhaps even Team Canada.

Yeah, there should be 8 countries represented and not mash-ups. No reason to exclude some combination of Switzerland, Slovakia, Germany. There can be a B pool competition that would create some exposure to the lower ranked teams, similar to the world championships.

per McKenzie - if it doesn't get changed - the North American young guns team would be for 23 and under only
he gave an example that MacKinnon could be good enough to play for Canada but would have no choice but to play for the young gun team.

That's so lame. Six teams is fine. How can the NHL be so tone-deaf on stuff like this? If the World Cup is just a glorified all-star game it will suck.
Honestly, is there any other sport in the world that has a gimmicky 'young guns' format for international tournaments?

As for why 8 teams and not 6... answer is $$$$$. More games = more $

The National Hockey League and its players association have told team executives they hope to generate between $75 million and $100 million from the rekindled World Cup of Hockey.
A person familiar with the matter told TSN that the tournament, which is scheduled to be held in September 2016, will raise about half its revenue from the sale of broadcast and internet streaming rights. The NHL and NHLPA have predicted those rights may garner close to $50 million.
It's a gamble to spend so much on a tournament like the World Cup when there's no guarantee Team Canada will advance beyond the round robin portion. But if it does, there could be a big payoff in TV ratings. The final of the World Cup will be a best-of-three format, TSN has learned.
Besides TV rights, the NHL and NHLPA will also sell sponsorship rights to the World Cup. They anticipate selling to eight premier corporate sponsors and negotiating deals of at least $1.5 million in each category, a source told TSN.
The NHL and NHLPA will also garner revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. However, it's expected that the NHL and the Players' Association will have to pay Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment at least $5 million for hosting the three-week tournament.
While executives with the Montreal Canadiens wanted to host some of the World Cup games at the Bell Centre, the NHL and its players union decided to host all of the games in Toronto. That way, if the tournament is a success, they could auction off the rights to host the games in 2019, perhaps, to the city that offers the best revenue guarantee - be it Montreal, New York, Stockholm, Moscow, or another city.

No, six teams is a joke. Making it gimmicky is even dumber.

Yeah, who can imagine holding a prestigious international sporting tournament with only six countries?

Okay, but even that is a secondary tournament to the World Cup.
Its not much of a 'World Cup' if, you know, the vast majority of the World isnt even represented.
Thats like the team that wins the Superbowl or the 'World Series' being 'World Champions.'
Its stupid.

I hadn't thought of that... could you imagine a Canadian young gun being the guy that has a four goal game shockingly knocking Canada out of the tournament? I don't think he'd be a hero to Canada after that - would he?

They obviously have a mandate to have NHL players only, and outside of the top 6, the smaller countries cannot ice a full team.
Too bad, as this does tarnish the event somewhat.

I like the young guns idea. But I think they would easily win a Sept touranment. Vets will still be fat, slow and heat stroked in Sept.

Haha, what a lame tournament. I wouldn't be surprised if a number of NHL stars saw this format and just laughed it off and said "Yeah, I'm not risking injury before training camp for that ****ty gimmick".
