Marc Staal's six-year extension with NYR expected to have AAV of about $5.7M. Heavy lifting on negotiations done; still finalizing paperwork

Free agent frenzy just ain't what she used to be.

Pretty good price if true. Probably would have gotten more on open market.

wow, I"m not sure if he would have got much more than that this summer. It did just raise the price tag for everyone else though.

not for Curtis Glencross and his agent. He'll be one of the biggest names who is still in the prime of their playing career.

I can't imagine paying 5.7M to a Dman on pace for 2G, 14P this year. I know he is solid in his own zone, but that's crazy.
And people complain about Widemans salary. Wideman may score quadruple Staals points this season. Obviuosly points arent everything, but that a whole lot of defensive awareness you need to make up for quadruple the points.
I would lose my mind if we had that contract, especially for 6 more years. No thanks.

I'm kind of shocked he didn't hold out and go to Carolina.

He will be sought after by a few teams but he's past his prime (and I don't mean that he's no longer good but that he's nearing his mid-30's) and probably looking at his last contract this summer.

I don't think the whole Staal thing is working out for that franchise. They could definitely use a defenseman like Staal but it hasn't worked out that well with the two brothers.

Why would he want to go to a market like Carolina when he is playing on New York? Seems like and brainer to me. A team making the playoffs consistently recently or a team at the bottom of the standings?
Why leave if he is happy.

Yeah we are kind of assuming Carolina still wants all the brothers.
I have a feeling if anything they are trying to move one of the brothers out.

Disagree. Staal just turned 28, so his contract wont have many out-of-his-prime years. Players like Carle, Niskanen, and Orpik will be his contract comparables. I'd gladly take Staal over any of those players. Orpik, especially, signing that 5 years, 27.5M contract last off-season meant a player like Staal was easily worth 6M+ on the open market. Heck, Orpik is already as old as Staal will be when his contract ends and both of them you'll be lucky to get 20 points out of.

The flames may have offered 7M 7yrs. I would have been ok with it. For that reason this was a good deal for the Rags.

Somewhere in Edmonton Mac-T is sitting in his office with his head resting on his arm and his fist pounding the desk while he moans "No No No No"
No good defensemen for you!

Wouldn't surprise me if Eric signs in NY as a free agent in a year's time.

Just for the record Carolina has 3 of the Staals. The youngest in between the AHL and NHL.
Good signing by the Rangers.

There is no chance that Petry goes back to Edmonton, I think they could offer him a $7 x 6 deal at this point and he'd sneer at them and tell them that there is no way in hell that he's going back to that gong show.
I think its going to be incredibly hard for the Oilers to attract free agents this summer if the so called forensic audit doesn't result in a clean sweep of the hockey department.
Players can tolerate some losing in exchange for an overpayment. What players can't tolerate is throwing themselves into the pit of despair up the road where that team will be extremely lucky to get near 20 wins this year or compete for a playoff spot in the next 5.

Likely a case of a home town premium to sign there.

7 million for Staal? Maybe on a short term deal, not for 7 years.
Even then 7.0 is too much, imo.
