Cripes. 10th overall pick, looked like a very good pick at the time. I can't believe that he's actually bad enough to be on waivers. I would almost take a chance with him. If only we weren't stacked for left wing prospects.

Yeah I'm surprised there wasn't at least some type of trade market for him.
I hope the Oilers claim him just for giggles.

I am not sure that he was ever that good to begin with. He seemed like a risky pick in hindsite. One of those European teenagers that played in a men's league and did alright for his age, but wasn't outstanding really.
I think it was a case where immediate potential NHL readiness raised his value and was something the Oilers were looking for at the time.

The more I think of it, is it a case of really poor drafting, a crap development system or both coming from Edmonton.
Don't worry, I know the answer. Its rhetorical

There was nothing to ruin, just a bad prospect who was always overhyped.

Hindsight would suggest that this is a guy who matured physically at a young age and pretty much hit his peak at 20 years old, and could not improve after that. Maybe he can carve out 3-4 more years as a crash and bang 4th line winger. But that does appear to be what he is. Maybe he can have a Dan Cleary like resurrection later in his career, but I think that is unlikely.

I watched more of him than I'd like to admit, being in Edmonton and all.
This kid had the tools but was seriously mis-managed. I think he can be a heck of a player but someone needs to put some time in with him.
Of all the oiler prospects, Laarson and Pajama-yama (or however you spell it) were two that I thought needed time but had high upside.

Totally disagree. Magnus Paajarvi was a decent prospect, was definitely overhyped but was always good. He scored 15 goals in his rookie season using the same quick shot and instincts in close that he was advertised to have.
He wasn't physically ready however and that quickly caught up to him. They ruined him, he's a textbook case of Oiler rushing. There was no need to play him as a teenager.
He never should have scored a hattrick in his first preseason game, that sealed his fate.

the more I think about this the more I want us to claim him and let he and Sven battle it out on the farm for a few months to see who gets called up for a skill position.

He was a very good prospect. I recall the TSN guys gushing over him at the World Juniors (after his draft year, coiler property) indicating he would immediately be their best player. Not high praise considering that dumpster fire, but still. I was seriously worried that he would be a player for them, before I came to my senses and realised that the oilers are no good.

If all this is true than why has he regressed so badly in St.Louis? I think he was ready physically, but did not have it mentally. The result is a player who looks lost today.

Not sure if he regressed while in St. Louis (haven't watched him there), but that is a tough line up to crack. A second line winger in Edmo is probably more likely AHL bound on a solid team. Bottom line is that he isn't that good now and I certainly see no reason for the Flames to pick him up.

I see some parallels between MPS and Virtanen. Example of how poor hockey sense can hold a guy back
