Cuba has a GDP comparable to Jamaica or the Dominican Republic. With a relaxing of centralized control and US restrictions, there's no reason it couldn't be up there with Trinidad or Barbados, which have twice the GDP per capita.

Isn't it banking that drives Trinidad/Barbados?
I can't seem to recall there being any industry other than sugar in Barbados.

An American friend asked me why Canadians like to travel to Cuba. I said it's because we can.
I wanted to say it's because there are no Americans to spoil it for those of us who can go.

Cuba also has a fairly large diaspora in the U.S. that will likely invest in their homeland and funnel some capital back to Cuba once it officially opens for business to Americans again.

Huge natural gas industry in Trinidad relative to its population. Cuba would be driven more by industrial and manufacturing industry.

To be fair to Rubio, a lot of his powerbase is the Miami Cuban community which is pretty vehemently anti-regime. This is just a politician echoing the feelings of a large part of his constituents ... and probably his own family.

Its not even just that, its because Cuba is a special place.
I dont even bother with most of Mexico anymore and Cancun isnt even an option.
I dont know what it is, the lack of uber-commercialism or the fact that the Cubans genuinely like and appreciate visitors, I dont know, but to me its special.

From what I have read, Florida is the only state where Latinos tend to vote Republican over Democrat, and even then it is usually pretty close to 50/50 with Rubio taking about 55% of the Latino vote last time.
I think his base is a lot simpler than just the Cuban community in Florida. Florida is a GOP state at its heart and I think that is what he is trying to appeal too more than ethnic lines. If he has political aspirations on a national level (and there was talk of him running for president one day), then he is going to have to forget about the Latino vote on national level and focus on towing the Republican line.
