So what gives - players keep coming down with the mumps - Sidney Crosby apparently being the latest one...
So here is my question - I am the same age as these guys, and I received the MMR vaccine, as did my kids (measles, mumps, rubella). Is this a case of these guys not getting their vaccine, the vaccine wearing off over time, or a different strand of mumps, (like how there are tonnes of strains of the flu)? I am just confused, I know nothing about the mumps as I thought it was pretty much eradicated in modern north america?
Blame it on Canada, eh?
Quote:
In the US, where vaccines are mandatory, mumps is rare enough that the CDC reports a few hundred cases a year. Canada though, doesn’t have a general vaccination policy and only three Canadian provinces mandate school kids to be vaccinated before entering the school system.
Though most players likely got vaccinations either as children or through the NHL, they could be overdue for a booster. And vaccines are also only about 88% effective at protecting against the disease. After the New York Rangers’ Tanner Glass came down with the disease , the team vaccinated all of their players again.
