Dreger chimed in on a similar subject this morning on TSN radio:
I have to wonder who Treliving might class as an expendable asset. Who isn't going to be a part of this franchise going forward, but still has enough value to land a decent asset?
Funny how dreger can't even mention the JVR trade (which was a freaking steal) and always has to cycle back to phil kessel.....time to try something new dregs.
I think the obvious trade candidates with any value would be hudler, backlund and potentially jones if he has a strong finish to the season. All are signed another year at least and are known to be solid players. If anything significant is coming back, my money is on one of these three being involved at the very least and you better be getting something significant back if you're moving the first two guys on that list.

In regards to defense, I feel it's less about playing time, and more about the quality of opponents you face, play with and situations you are put in.
Do we want Wotherspoon playing against NHL guys? Do we want Wotherspoon getting the top notch match ups in the AHL to defend against, or 3rd pairing assignments in the NHL? Do we want to expose Wotherspoon on a road trip to the home coach being able to exploit last change and get match ups against him we'd rather not have. Do we want him getting PP or PK time in the AHL, or riding the pine in those situations in the NHL?
Not really about ice time, about ice quality and level IMO. I have no idea for the record what's right for him at this point, but I trust the Flames to make the call when it is.
3rd pairing assignments will be more difficult then 1st pairing assignments in the AHL. He would also get some PK time in the NHL as a 3rd pairing defenseman.

Third pairing guys face top lines a lot on the road, at least until they can manage to change on the fly.

I agree. Your assuming the point of my post was to suggest that harder is better right now for him, that wasn't the point. Type of play and quality of opponent is important but not becissarily harder = better IMO.
All the questions about trading Engelland and Smid, and giving the spot to wotherspoon is dangerous IMO. Defenceman needs 200 games in mens league, what if someone in the top-4 gets injured for long period of time, we have been very lucky that it hasnīt happened. Suddenly Wotherspoon is playing top-4 minutes and is getting crushed.
Same goes all the trade stajan talk, Monahan has been excellent in top role. But what if he would have been injured, what do you do? You put Jooris against Getzlaf or Kopitar etc. that would be suicide.
NHL isi not development league, best players play. (Maybe top-3 picks get possibilty to adjust). Stajan is in wrong place he is not fourth line center and that we have too many centers but IMO that problem can be solved in the summer.
I have no issues with Engelland's play. He has been exactly as advertised for a 6th/7th defenceman. I may have a problem with his AAV, but that's not his fault & another issue entirely.
Smid has been disappointing this season. He's been a warrior & has sacrificed his body a lot, so I wonder if he might be playing hurt. Either that or he has Oileritis and can't remember how to play in the defensive zone or transition out of it.
I wouldn't advocate trading either of them, but if Wotherspoon was a better option then it wouldn't hurt to have one of them sitting in the pressbox every other game.
Who would this big name player be that the Flames could be targeting?
ive been wondering the same thing.
Pure guesses on my part:
1) Doan/Yandle/OEL: Treliving knows the Phoenix system and what kind of asset they want and what may trigger them to make a big move. Makes sense that if Phoenix wants to do so that he would be in the discussions.
2) Semin/Ward/Staal/Staal: Carolina's owner has been known to shed salary from time to time and the Flames are able to pick it up. I don't think we need Semin or Ward, but we have the ability to take on those contracts. Should we do so, it comes as a steep price to Carolina. Big Names do not equal good value in many cases. As for Staal and Staal, Eric turned 30 about 6 weeks ago, and Jordan is 26 working through a broken leg. Eric's salary is more than his cap hit. Jordan is signed at $6 per for another 9 years or so. Again, is the owner looking to get out from under those contracts? If they are, we are one of the few teams that can be in the market to do something.
3) Washington: Mike Green. Again, big name, big cap hit, not great value. It would cost Washington something to unload the contract.

I can see Jordon Staal as a player the Flames would target. Management seems intent on getting bigger up front. Staal is 6'4" and 220. He's under 27. Great on the PK. But that's an awfully tough contract to swallow for a guy whose ceiling is 50 pts. And paying a 2nd/3rd line centre that kind of dough would throw the Flames salary structure completely out of whack. Still, it wouldn't surprise me if Treliving were sniffing around Carolina.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

I don't think they are necessarily targeting anyone. With the hot start the insiders were bound to ask Flames brass what their plan is now due to being a playoff contender much sooner than anticipated. Basically all that has been said is what we heard before: the Flames will make trades if it makes sense long term and they have the green light to spend to the cap if the value is there.
I have doubts anything happens this season. In the summer they can sign Gio, Minahan and Johnny to extensions. I also see them being aggressive to add another top end player via trade when teams are looking at their annual spend.
Now that some of the young assets have prove their worth I can see a quality for quantity trade happening over the summer where the flames acquire a large salary for lesser pieces
